~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
PH.D. POSITION FOR A PLURIDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH PROJECT ON CONVIVENCIA
starting on 15th February, 2016.
CONVIVENCIA is a joint research and fellowship program of four Max Planck Institutes: the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz – Max Planck Institute (Prof. Dr. Gerhard Wolf), the Max Planck Institute for European Legal History, Frankfurt/Main (Prof. Dr. Thomas Duve), the Max Planck Institute for History of Science, Berlin (Prof. Dr. Jürgen Renn) and the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology, Halle/Saale (Prof. Dr. Günther Schlee).
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
The regional focus is not limited to the Mediterranean area as the name of the frame project might suggest. The role of the Halle component of this project is to explore the theme of organisation of ethnic and religious difference in wider regional and historical contexts for theory building based on comparative perspectives.
Project proposals should however, explicitly connect to the Convivencia topic. Those dealing with empires or (parts of) former empires are invited. The focus should be on modes of organising difference from jural, administrative and/or everyday life perspectives. Regionally, the department has its strength in Central Asia, Africa and the Muslim World. This focus is not exclusive, but projects on these regions would fit particularly well into comparative frameworks established at the institute. The project should link diachronic perspectives with present ways of life and modes of organization.
In view of recent developments, countries like Syria or Iraq would provide interesting cases for such a research. They meet the criterion of being part of former empires, both by their Ottoman heritage and by their French and English, respectively, colonial pasts. Different models of organizing ethnic and religious plurality have been tried there, locally or by means of interference from outside. Field research can be done about these issues among refugees in Europe, in neighbouring countries and in accessible parts of Syria and/or Iraq. Applicants with good knowledge of the Arabic language and local expertise in this region would be highly welcome and, in case of equal qualifications with others, might be given some preference.
Your Profile
Good field research skills, the ability to work in a team, and a good command of written and spoken English are required. Applicants for this Ph.D. position should hold a Masters degree in anthropology, sociology or a related discipline or submit evidence indicating that a MA dissertation will be finished and submitted before the designated starting date. Non-anthropologists should preferably be able to make use of anthropological research methods.
German language expertise is not required but learning German is encouraged, especially if relevant literature is available in German.
Our Offer
The position is awarded for three years. The workplace is Halle/Saale (Sachsen-Anhalt, Germany). We expect our PhD students to complete a one year period of fieldwork as part of their studies.
The Max Planck Society strives to employ more persons with disabilities and explicitly encourages applications. Furthermore, the Max Planck Society is committed to raising the proportion of women in underrepresented fields; we thus explicitly encourage applications by women.
Contact
Please submit your application electronically by 4 January 2016 following the link for vacancies on our homepage.
Applicants should send the following documentation:
cover letter
CV including list of publications
project proposal (five pages maximum)
photocopies of university degrees
names of two referees, whom Professor Günther Schlee may contact for confidential references
THREE-YEAR RESIDENTIAL POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH ASSOCIATE POSITION IN SOCIOCULTURAL ANTHROPOLOGY (PRINCETON)
The Department of Anthropology invites applications for a three-year residential postdoctoral research associate position in sociocultural anthropology, to begin in July, 2016. Individuals who received the PhD in 2014 or later are eligible to apply; the PhD is required for appointment. The deadline for applications is January 15, 2016, at 11:59 pm EST.
We seek ethnographically and theoretically engaged scholars whose research, teaching and advising promise to expand the range of inquiry in our department and in the discipline by interrelating international and U.S. ethnography in novel ways. We especially welcome scholars whose ethnographic research advances understandings of transnationalism as a dimension of social life -- e.g., studies grounded in experiences of diaspora, education, governance, migration, religion, rights claiming, war, the professions, or fields of knowledge.
We are interested in scholars of unusual promise and originality who plan to pursue faculty positions after completing the third year of the appointment. The successful candidate will be appointed for three years, reviewed annually contingent upon satisfactory performance. In addition to salary and benefits, the postdoctoral research associate will be provided with an annual research fund. Postdoctoral research associates are eligible to apply for additional research funds from the University.
In addition to pursuing a personal research agenda, responsibilities will include teaching two courses each year (one each semester) and some advising of undergraduate majors' independent work. The courses will consist of our introductory course (Anthropology 201: "Foundational concepts in anthropology") and a seminar related to the researcher's research interests. The seminar may vary each year; we would not expect more than three course preparations over the six semesters of the fellowship (i.e., the annual offering of "Foundations" and two different seminars). Teaching and advising are contingent upon approval from the Dean of the Faculty. The researcher will be expected to participate in the intellectual life of the department and University during the full tenure of the appointment; the researcher will be provided with mentorship and opportunities to share work in progress.
Applicants should apply online and submit a cover letter summarizing their teaching and research interests, and research goals for the next three years. Application dossiers should also include a full cv, names and contact information for four referees, a writing sample (e.g., one or two dissertation chapters), and syllabi for two undergraduate courses in sociocultural anthropology (as outlined above). Applicants who are currently graduate students should provide evidence of their progress toward timely completion of the degree in the form of a letter from their department or committee chair, or their director of graduate studies.
Materials should be addressed to the Search Committee, Department of Anthropology Applications must be submitted online at: jobs.princeton.edu. This position is subject to the University's background check policy. Further information about the department - including the current faculty's areas of teaching and research -- can be found at http://www.princeton.edu/anthropology/
INTERNATIONAL PARTNERSHIP AND MOBILITY SCHEME: FUNDING CALL
The British Academy is now inviting applications to its International Partnership and Mobility (IPM) Scheme 2015-16. The application form is now available on the Academy's online e-GAP application system: https://egap.britac.ac.uk
Applications must be submitted via e-GAP. Applicants must register, if they have not already done so, and follow the links to 'funding schemes' from the personal welcome page, and then the link to this scheme.
Purpose of the Scheme
One-year awards of £10,000 and three-year awards of up to £30,000 are available to support the development of research partnerships between UK scholars and scholars in Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, the Middle East, Eurasia, South Asia, East and South-East Asia. Awards cover any branch of the humanities and social sciences, and are intended to focus on collaborative research on a specific theme of mutual interest, rather than purely on establishing networks.
The scheme is intended to initiate the development of long-term, vigorous links between the UK and overseas scholars while encouraging an intra-regional exchange of expertise and knowledge sharing. There is an emphasis on innovative, new initiatives that broaden the UK research base as well as on sustainability, with a good prospect of the work attracting further future funds from other sources and the partnership becoming self-sustaining in the longer term. Partnerships can include a range of related activities, and mobility (in the form of visits in both directions, exchanges, etc.) should form an integral part of proposals.
This year the British Academy expects to make approximately 20 three-year awards and approximately 10 one-year awards.
In this round, a number of one-year partnerships will be co-funded by the Ministry of Science and Technology of Taiwan (MOST) and the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences (SASS).
Eligibility
Applicants must be of postdoctoral or equivalent status (i.e. academic staff with at least one or two years of teaching/research experience) and should be based in a research active institution for the duration of the award.
The principal applicant must be 'ordinarily resident' in the United Kingdom. The co-applicant must be an academic based in an institution in Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, the Middle East, Eurasia, South Asia, East or South-East Asia.
Level of Award
Grants are offered up to a maximum of £10,000 per year for a period of one year or three years.
For further information regarding the award, including a full list of eligibility criteria, please consult the award's Scheme Notes, available on e-GAP.
Deadline for submission of applications: 10 February 2016 (5pm UK time)
Results expected: June 2016
Earliest Start Date for Research: 1 September 2016
SUMMER SCHOOL EHESS: THE UNITY OF THE SOCIAL SCIENCES?
Paris, Ecole des hautes études en sciences sociales
June 20-July 1, 2016
Hyper-specialization characterizes most, or all fields of academic studies. Medicine, history, economics or anthropology, are divided in internal subfields, often compartmentalized from each other and bearing little connection to the mother discipline. This hyper-specialization helped the development of all sciences, including the Social Sciences, but is often unsuitable to account for the complexity and scale of social processes. Culture, economics, politics, sexuality, the family, and technology shape each other in ways that demands a sobering return to broad scholarship and synthetic analysis and the capacity to move from economic models to historical narrative, from thick ethnography to global processes, from statistical analyses to hermeneutic understanding of everyday practices.
To find an inspiration for such model of scholarship, we need to look no further than at Adam Smith, Max Weber, Pareto, or Durkheim, all trained in philosophy, economics, history, political science, the study of religion, sociology, anthropology, and psychology. In order to make sense of the momentous changes undergone by their respective society, these thinkers borrowed freely from various disciplines and practiced Interdisciplinarity before the name was invented.
In the landscape of world academia, the EHESS has long stood out for the interdisciplinary character of its pedagogical and research program. This interdisciplinary tradition explains its sustained and steady flow of outstanding scholars such as Lucien Febvre, Claude Levi-Strauss, Fernand Braudel, Roland Barthes, Pierre Bourdieu, Jacques Derrida, Germaine Tillon (to quote only a few names). No other academic institution in the world has implemented more systematically the deliberate encounter of the Social and Human sciences in its teaching curriculum, most notably but not only: sociology with history, philosophy and literature, history and economics, philosophy and cognitive sciences, anthropology and sociology.
Because of this rich and unique intellectual tradition, the EHESS offers a Summer Program around the topic of The Unity of the Social Sciences through 4 intensive courses. These courses explore crucial questions:
a. How are we to criticize the models of economy which have become so dominant throughout the world? What does it mean to make economics more open to sociology and history?
b. How do the physical and social structure of cities change over time and how can we observe such changes? What is the agency of economic powers, government, social movements of various kinds, and the inhabitants themselves in this process?
c. How have technology, politics, and economics changed the nature of the family and of sexuality itself? What is the future of the family in the face of the radical changes undergone by gender, sexuality and reproduction?
d. How do corporations, the nation-state and culture interlock with global processes and transform the structure of modern lives?
The Unity of the Social Sciences Summer School at the EHESS brings together a large group of outstanding scholars whose aim will be to raise innovative questions about the economy, the city, globalization, and the family.
Students of all institutions and disciplines are invited to join us for a fascinating cluster of 4 classes during which they will be able to hear lectures by anthropologists, historians, sociologists, legal scholars, among which Michel Agier, Mathieu Arnoux, Alain Blum, Laurent Berger, Eve Chiapello, Maurizio Gribaudi, Eva Illouz, Sébastien Lechevalier, Otto Pfersmann, Enrique Porqueres, Alessandro Stanziani, Christian Topalov, Valeria Siniscalchi, Isabelle Thireau and others. Courses will be organized by seminar leaders, but will include invited guest lecturers who will discuss for 1-2 hours their research with the seminar leader and the students. The summer school will also include two lectures opened to the broad audience, one with Thomas Piketty, the second with Jean-Louis Fabiani and two intensive workshops on students’ research projects of the students. The purpose of these doctoral workshops will be to help students to think about and discuss the interdisciplinarity of their projects. All courses and readings will be in English.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
PH.D. POSITION FOR A PLURIDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH PROJECT ON CONVIVENCIA
starting on 15th February, 2016.
CONVIVENCIA is a joint research and fellowship program of four Max Planck Institutes: the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz – Max Planck Institute (Prof. Dr. Gerhard Wolf), the Max Planck Institute for European Legal History, Frankfurt/Main (Prof. Dr. Thomas Duve), the Max Planck Institute for History of Science, Berlin (Prof. Dr. Jürgen Renn) and the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology, Halle/Saale (Prof. Dr. Günther Schlee).
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
The regional focus is not limited to the Mediterranean area as the name of the frame project might suggest. The role of the Halle component of this project is to explore the theme of organisation of ethnic and religious difference in wider regional and historical contexts for theory building based on comparative perspectives.
Project proposals should however, explicitly connect to the Convivencia topic. Those dealing with empires or (parts of) former empires are invited. The focus should be on modes of organising difference from jural, administrative and/or everyday life perspectives. Regionally, the department has its strength in Central Asia, Africa and the Muslim World. This focus is not exclusive, but projects on these regions would fit particularly well into comparative frameworks established at the institute. The project should link diachronic perspectives with present ways of life and modes of organization.
In view of recent developments, countries like Syria or Iraq would provide interesting cases for such a research. They meet the criterion of being part of former empires, both by their Ottoman heritage and by their French and English, respectively, colonial pasts. Different models of organizing ethnic and religious plurality have been tried there, locally or by means of interference from outside. Field research can be done about these issues among refugees in Europe, in neighbouring countries and in accessible parts of Syria and/or Iraq. Applicants with good knowledge of the Arabic language and local expertise in this region would be highly welcome and, in case of equal qualifications with others, might be given some preference.
Your Profile
Good field research skills, the ability to work in a team, and a good command of written and spoken English are required. Applicants for this Ph.D. position should hold a Masters degree in anthropology, sociology or a related discipline or submit evidence indicating that a MA dissertation will be finished and submitted before the designated starting date. Non-anthropologists should preferably be able to make use of anthropological research methods.
German language expertise is not required but learning German is encouraged, especially if relevant literature is available in German.
Our Offer
The position is awarded for three years. The workplace is Halle/Saale (Sachsen-Anhalt, Germany). We expect our PhD students to complete a one year period of fieldwork as part of their studies.
The Max Planck Society strives to employ more persons with disabilities and explicitly encourages applications. Furthermore, the Max Planck Society is committed to raising the proportion of women in underrepresented fields; we thus explicitly encourage applications by women.
Contact
Please submit your application electronically by 4 January 2016 following the link for vacancies on our homepage.
Applicants should send the following documentation:
cover letter
CV including list of publications
project proposal (five pages maximum)
photocopies of university degrees
names of two referees, whom Professor Günther Schlee may contact for confidential references

THREE-YEAR RESIDENTIAL POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH ASSOCIATE POSITION IN SOCIOCULTURAL ANTHROPOLOGY (PRINCETON)
The Department of Anthropology invites applications for a three-year residential postdoctoral research associate position in sociocultural anthropology, to begin in July, 2016. Individuals who received the PhD in 2014 or later are eligible to apply; the PhD is required for appointment. The deadline for applications is January 15, 2016, at 11:59 pm EST.
We seek ethnographically and theoretically engaged scholars whose research, teaching and advising promise to expand the range of inquiry in our department and in the discipline by interrelating international and U.S. ethnography in novel ways. We especially welcome scholars whose ethnographic research advances understandings of transnationalism as a dimension of social life -- e.g., studies grounded in experiences of diaspora, education, governance, migration, religion, rights claiming, war, the professions, or fields of knowledge.
We are interested in scholars of unusual promise and originality who plan to pursue faculty positions after completing the third year of the appointment. The successful candidate will be appointed for three years, reviewed annually contingent upon satisfactory performance. In addition to salary and benefits, the postdoctoral research associate will be provided with an annual research fund. Postdoctoral research associates are eligible to apply for additional research funds from the University.
In addition to pursuing a personal research agenda, responsibilities will include teaching two courses each year (one each semester) and some advising of undergraduate majors' independent work. The courses will consist of our introductory course (Anthropology 201: "Foundational concepts in anthropology") and a seminar related to the researcher's research interests. The seminar may vary each year; we would not expect more than three course preparations over the six semesters of the fellowship (i.e., the annual offering of "Foundations" and two different seminars). Teaching and advising are contingent upon approval from the Dean of the Faculty. The researcher will be expected to participate in the intellectual life of the department and University during the full tenure of the appointment; the researcher will be provided with mentorship and opportunities to share work in progress.
Applicants should apply online and submit a cover letter summarizing their teaching and research interests, and research goals for the next three years. Application dossiers should also include a full cv, names and contact information for four referees, a writing sample (e.g., one or two dissertation chapters), and syllabi for two undergraduate courses in sociocultural anthropology (as outlined above). Applicants who are currently graduate students should provide evidence of their progress toward timely completion of the degree in the form of a letter from their department or committee chair, or their director of graduate studies.
Materials should be addressed to the Search Committee, Department of Anthropology Applications must be submitted online at: jobs.princeton.edu. This position is subject to the University's background check policy. Further information about the department - including the current faculty's areas of teaching and research -- can be found at http://www.princeton.edu/anthropology/

INTERNATIONAL PARTNERSHIP AND MOBILITY SCHEME: FUNDING CALL
The British Academy is now inviting applications to its International Partnership and Mobility (IPM) Scheme 2015-16. The application form is now available on the Academy's online e-GAP application system: https://egap.britac.ac.uk
Applications must be submitted via e-GAP. Applicants must register, if they have not already done so, and follow the links to 'funding schemes' from the personal welcome page, and then the link to this scheme.
Purpose of the Scheme
One-year awards of £10,000 and three-year awards of up to £30,000 are available to support the development of research partnerships between UK scholars and scholars in Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, the Middle East, Eurasia, South Asia, East and South-East Asia. Awards cover any branch of the humanities and social sciences, and are intended to focus on collaborative research on a specific theme of mutual interest, rather than purely on establishing networks.
The scheme is intended to initiate the development of long-term, vigorous links between the UK and overseas scholars while encouraging an intra-regional exchange of expertise and knowledge sharing. There is an emphasis on innovative, new initiatives that broaden the UK research base as well as on sustainability, with a good prospect of the work attracting further future funds from other sources and the partnership becoming self-sustaining in the longer term. Partnerships can include a range of related activities, and mobility (in the form of visits in both directions, exchanges, etc.) should form an integral part of proposals.
This year the British Academy expects to make approximately 20 three-year awards and approximately 10 one-year awards.
In this round, a number of one-year partnerships will be co-funded by the Ministry of Science and Technology of Taiwan (MOST) and the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences (SASS).
Eligibility
Applicants must be of postdoctoral or equivalent status (i.e. academic staff with at least one or two years of teaching/research experience) and should be based in a research active institution for the duration of the award.
The principal applicant must be 'ordinarily resident' in the United Kingdom. The co-applicant must be an academic based in an institution in Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, the Middle East, Eurasia, South Asia, East or South-East Asia.
Level of Award
Grants are offered up to a maximum of £10,000 per year for a period of one year or three years.
For further information regarding the award, including a full list of eligibility criteria, please consult the award's Scheme Notes, available on e-GAP.
Deadline for submission of applications: 10 February 2016 (5pm UK time)
Results expected: June 2016
Earliest Start Date for Research: 1 September 2016

SUMMER SCHOOL EHESS: THE UNITY OF THE SOCIAL SCIENCES?
Paris, Ecole des hautes études en sciences sociales
June 20-July 1, 2016
Hyper-specialization characterizes most, or all fields of academic studies. Medicine, history, economics or anthropology, are divided in internal subfields, often compartmentalized from each other and bearing little connection to the mother discipline. This hyper-specialization helped the development of all sciences, including the Social Sciences, but is often unsuitable to account for the complexity and scale of social processes. Culture, economics, politics, sexuality, the family, and technology shape each other in ways that demands a sobering return to broad scholarship and synthetic analysis and the capacity to move from economic models to historical narrative, from thick ethnography to global processes, from statistical analyses to hermeneutic understanding of everyday practices.
To find an inspiration for such model of scholarship, we need to look no further than at Adam Smith, Max Weber, Pareto, or Durkheim, all trained in philosophy, economics, history, political science, the study of religion, sociology, anthropology, and psychology. In order to make sense of the momentous changes undergone by their respective society, these thinkers borrowed freely from various disciplines and practiced Interdisciplinarity before the name was invented.
In the landscape of world academia, the EHESS has long stood out for the interdisciplinary character of its pedagogical and research program. This interdisciplinary tradition explains its sustained and steady flow of outstanding scholars such as Lucien Febvre, Claude Levi-Strauss, Fernand Braudel, Roland Barthes, Pierre Bourdieu, Jacques Derrida, Germaine Tillon (to quote only a few names). No other academic institution in the world has implemented more systematically the deliberate encounter of the Social and Human sciences in its teaching curriculum, most notably but not only: sociology with history, philosophy and literature, history and economics, philosophy and cognitive sciences, anthropology and sociology.
Because of this rich and unique intellectual tradition, the EHESS offers a Summer Program around the topic of The Unity of the Social Sciences through 4 intensive courses. These courses explore crucial questions:
a. How are we to criticize the models of economy which have become so dominant throughout the world? What does it mean to make economics more open to sociology and history?
b. How do the physical and social structure of cities change over time and how can we observe such changes? What is the agency of economic powers, government, social movements of various kinds, and the inhabitants themselves in this process?
c. How have technology, politics, and economics changed the nature of the family and of sexuality itself? What is the future of the family in the face of the radical changes undergone by gender, sexuality and reproduction?
d. How do corporations, the nation-state and culture interlock with global processes and transform the structure of modern lives?
The Unity of the Social Sciences Summer School at the EHESS brings together a large group of outstanding scholars whose aim will be to raise innovative questions about the economy, the city, globalization, and the family.
Students of all institutions and disciplines are invited to join us for a fascinating cluster of 4 classes during which they will be able to hear lectures by anthropologists, historians, sociologists, legal scholars, among which Michel Agier, Mathieu Arnoux, Alain Blum, Laurent Berger, Eve Chiapello, Maurizio Gribaudi, Eva Illouz, Sébastien Lechevalier, Otto Pfersmann, Enrique Porqueres, Alessandro Stanziani, Christian Topalov, Valeria Siniscalchi, Isabelle Thireau and others. Courses will be organized by seminar leaders, but will include invited guest lecturers who will discuss for 1-2 hours their research with the seminar leader and the students. The summer school will also include two lectures opened to the broad audience, one with Thomas Piketty, the second with Jean-Louis Fabiani and two intensive workshops on students’ research projects of the students. The purpose of these doctoral workshops will be to help students to think about and discuss the interdisciplinarity of their projects. All courses and readings will be in English.
