PHD SCHOLARSHIP AT THE DEPARTMENT OF ANTHROPOLOGY, UNIVERSITY OF COPENHAGEN
"Global Europe: Constituting Europe from the outside in through artefacts"
The Department of Anthropology at the University of Copenhagen invites applications for a PhD scholarship within the project “Global Europe: Constituting Europe from the outside in through artefacts”, led by Prof. Oscar Salemink. The PhD position focus, as part of the project, on museums and heritage in South Africa and Europe.
The successful candidate will be employed from 1 February 2016, subject to approval from the Danish Council for Independent Research.
The application must be submitted electronically no later than 7 October 2015. See paragraph about online application at the bottom.
Project description
The idea of Europe – as continent, as civilization, as social imaginary, as transnational territorial institution – has been studied from various disciplines, but usually from within Europe. Historically, the idea of Europe emerged through the collection, circulation, classification and museum exhibition of objects from outside of Europe – Africa, Asia and the America – in the curiosity cabinets of the early modern period when Europe rose to world dominance. The aim of this project is to explore how the collection, circulation, classification and museum exhibition of objects define Europe from the outside in during Europe’s present loss of global hegemony – especially in relation to Japan and four non-European BRICS countries (Brazil, China, India, South Africa), in comparison with the early modern period of European ascendancy. The research will take place in museums in these five countries as well as in European museums, using anthropological, historical and museological methods.
The project comprises five Work Packages, consisting of historical and ethnographic research in museums and museum collections that speak to material cultural encounters in past and present between Europe on the one hand, and Japan and the non-European BRICS countries Brazil, India, China and South Africa, on the other. The research would be conducted in those countries and in European museums. The multi-disciplinary methodologies would include (1) an ethnographic and museological assessment of historical collections with specific focus on non-European artefacts that were exhibited in (early) modern Europe; (2) an ethnographic and museological assessment of contemporary exhibitions of both European and non-European collections in Japan and the four selected BRICS countries, with a view to understanding changes in global cultural hierarchies; (3) a museological assessment of collection and exhibition practices that used and showed objects to mark off Europe from non-Europe; (4) interviews with researchers, conservators, curators and other museum staff; (5) ethnographic museum methods involving qualitative in situ interviews with museum audiences and observation of their responses to the objects, collections and exhibitions with reference to social imaginaries of Europe; and (6) an explicitly comparative framing of the project before and after the field research phase, with a view to generating a series of authoritative – simultaneously in-depth and comparative – publications.
Work Package for South Africa (PhD project for three years):
South Africa has a mixed history of multiple settler colonizations and a late decolonization from Apartheid, becoming the source of much early modern European imagery of Africa and of both African resistance and “African Renaissance”. Sites: Iziko Museums of South Africa (Cape Town); British Museum and Cuming Museum (London); Rijksmuseum voor Volkenkunde (Leiden). The research will be partially hosted by the Institute for Humanities in Africa, University of Cape Town.

The Department of Anthropology is one of the Departments in the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences (FMG). Research and education are carried out by special institutes. The College of Social Sciences (CSS) and the Graduate School for the Social Sciences (GSSS) are responsible for the undergraduate and graduate teaching programmes in the social sciences. Research takes place under the aegis of the Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research (AISSR), a multidisciplinary research institute, the biggest one of its kind in the Netherlands and possibly in Europe. The broad scope and pluralism of our education and research programmes are inspired by and reflect a strong degree of internationalisation.
The AISSR and the Department of Anthropology at the University of Amsterdam are looking for a PhD candidate who will participate in the NWO-funded research project ‘Sexuality, Religion and Secularism. Cultural encounters in the African Diaspora and the Netherlands’.
Project Description
The PhD candidate will conduct the subproject entitled ‘Sexual well-being and relationships among African migrants’. This sub-project is embedded within the larger research program titled ‘Sexuality, Religion and Secularism. Cultural encounters in the African Diaspora and the Netherlands’, carried out in cooperation with the University of Groningen. The aim of this program is to research how sexual well-being is approached from three perspectives:
that of (Dutch) organizations working with a sexual health approach,
that of religious actors in the African Diaspora and
the perspective of African migrants themselves.
Each of these perspectives will be researched with attention to the particular cultural trajectories they are part of, emerging from sub-Sahara Africa and Europe. Theoretically, the research program conceptualizes these approaches in terms of practices and techniques of the self. Furthermore, the research program departs from the premise that secularity is not a neutral phenomenon, but implies particular techniques of the self and particular ways of framing religion and tradition.
The focus of the project for which we are currently hiring will be on the third perspective, with the aim of researching and analyzing the personal biographies and cultural trajectories of African migrants in the Netherlands. The focus is on the choices they make regarding their sexual well-being and relationships, and the ways they understand and experience the different (religious) organisations and agents they encounter in this search.
The PhD candidate will be based in Amsterdam at the AISSR and will conduct up to 12 months of fieldwork in the Randstad, the conurbation in the west of the Netherlands that encompasses Amsterdam, The Hague, Rotterdam and Utrecht and many smaller towns in between.

2 PHD POSITIONS
starting 1 January 2016
This project will investigate tactical, strategic, and operational learning of terrorist groups. Learning occurs in context, not in a vacuum. Answering the questions of learning from what or learning from whom, the project is designed to systematically analyse the three kinds of terrorist learning on three contextual levels: the micro level, the meso level, and the macro level. On the micro level, terrorist organisations learn from their own experiences. Terrorists scrutinise their past mistakes and successes. On the meso level, terrorists learn from other terrorist groups. Terrorist groups compete with or emulate other groups’ tactics, their strategies, and their operational innovations. Hezbollah’s suicide operations, for example, have been studied by terrorist organisations around the globe. On the macro level, terrorist groups are entangled in a violent competition with the state or they emulate state sponsors epitomised for example by training in how to use weapons or how to spread propaganda.
While the terrorism literature lacks primary data, this project will build on qualitative field research in the Middle East, Western Europe, the United States, and Sri Lanka. It capitalises on the accessibility of former members of terrorists groups who have reintegrated into society as well as the accessibility of prisoners.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
The postdoc and the doctoral students will conduct research and field work. Additionally, the postdoc will build and maintain close contacts with the academic and policy-making community in Europe and the United States.
We are looking for research proposals that will generate data that can be used for comparison. The applicants will be expected to share their data with other members of the team for joint analysis and publication.
For details of the research group see its homepage at: http://www.eth.mpg.de/3901243/rg_htl
Your Profile

Postdoctoral applicants should be in possession of a Ph.D. in social sciences (political science, sociology, anthropology, psychology, education science, criminology, or a related discipline) or submit evidence indicating that the dissertation will be finished and submitted before the designated starting date. Applicants for a Ph.D. position should be in an equivalent situation concerning the completion of a Masters.
German language expertise is not required but learning German is encouraged. Knowledge of Arabic and/or French is an advantage.
Our Offer
The PhD positions are awarded for three years. We expect our PhD students to complete a one year period of fieldwork as part of their studies.
The Postdoctoral position (TVöD E13) is offered for three years (with the possibility of a two-year extension). The TVöD position is open to scientists who have completed their doctorate.
The workplace is Halle/Saale (Sachsen-Anhalt, Germany), except when undertaking field research.

Open to: PhD holders in a relevant historical discipline
Fellowship: salary of EUR 2000 for a period of 2 years
Description
New Europe College is one of the South-Eastern Europe’s leading institutes for advanced studies, internationally appreciated for its high quality and innovative approach to research. Founded in 1994 as an independent institute, it is officially recognized the Romanian Ministry of Education and Research as an institutional structure for postgraduate studies in the humanities and social sciences, at the level of advanced studies. With strong international links, New Europe College managed to create a stimulating environment for interdisciplinary dialogue and critical debates. Its main aim is to strengthen research in the humanities and social science and to promote contacts between Romanian scholars and their peers worldwide.
Following the European Research Council competition for Consolidator Grants (2014), New Europe College became the Host Institution of such a grant. The project title is “Luxury, Fashion and Social status in Early Modern South-Eastern Europe” and its Principal Investigator is Constanţa Vintilă-Ghiţulescu, researcher at New Europe College and at the “Nicolae Iorga” Institute of History in Bucharest.
The project aims to trace the role luxury played in the modernisation process in South-Eastern Europe, taking into account the specific features of the region and how South-Eastern European peoples, and their Byzantine and Ottoman heritage are viewed through the stereotype of “Balkanism”. Thus, there is a need to examine the traditional society and luxury as a cultural habitus of power; how the luxury tastes developed within the process of “Europenization”; the appearance of consumer society. From the economic point of view, South-Eastern Europe rewards analysis as the intersection of two “world economic systems”, in Immanuel Wallerstein’s terms. Originally located in the Ottoman world economic system, South-Eastern Europe became a periphery of the Western European system as this system rose to world supremacy. An extremely interesting aspect of such peripheral zones is the coincidentia oppositorum principle, especially in evidence in cultural matters. However, other tendencies in the same field did not follow the same trend, offering an excellent subject for economic analysis, especially from the perspective of luxury goods. The project’s findings will help towards a better knowledge of changes in European society in its transition to modernity, and of similarities and differences between the various regions of Europe.
Within the project, 4 post-doctoral positions will be available for the following themes of research:
The luxury goods trade in the Ottoman Empire and the Balkans in the 17th and 18th centuries;
Regional identities and forms of segregation in Early Modern South-Eastern Europe;
Social Elites in South-Eastern Europe;
Fashion and gender in Early Modern South-Eastern Europe.
The post-doctoral researchers will have the opportunity to work on these projects, based on their expertise and research ideas, in consultation with the principal investigator and the other members of the team. They are encouraged to plan research stays at foreign libraries and archives and to be as innovative as possible. At the same time, they are expected to be present at all the team meetings (one every 6 months), and at other events organized within the project, and to discuss their findings. At the end of their activity they must provide, as results of their research, the following: 2 articles in international indexed peer-reviewed journals; 2 chapters in collective volumes and 3 participations at international scientific events. These contributions must be related to their specific theme of research within the project, acknowledge their participation in this project and mention the source of funding.

1 POSTDOCTORAL POSITION
starting 1 January 2016

FUNG GLOBAL FELLOWS PROGRAM
Princeton University is pleased to announce the call for applications to the Fung Global Fellows Program at the Princeton Institute for International and Regional Studies (PIIRS). Each year the program selects six scholars from around the world to be in residence at Princeton for an academic year and to engage in research and discussion around a common theme. Fellowships are awarded to scholars employed outside the United States who are expected to return to their positions, and who have demonstrated outstanding scholarly achievement and exhibit unusual intellectual promise but who are still early in their careers.
During the academic year 2016/17, the theme for the Fung Global Fellows Program will be “International Society: Institutions and Actors in Global Governance.” The growth of international organizations and transnational actors has brought about the emergence of a dense international society above the nation-state. Under what circumstances do new international organizations or transnational associations emerge, and when do they expand in their membership and jurisdiction? Does international society function as a constraint on states? How do states and societal actors navigate the complex and overlapping jurisdictions of international organizations? In what ways do international organizations and associations function as distinct cultures or as bureaucracies with their own interests? This year’s cohort of Fung fellows will examine the emergence, functioning, and effects of international organizations and transnational associations of all types (state and non-state, focused on a single issue or world region, or examined comparatively) from a cultural, historical, political, sociological, or other perspective. Researchers working on any historical period or region of the world and from any disciplinary background in the humanities and social sciences are encouraged to apply.
Applications are due on November 1, 2015. To be eligible, applicants must have received their Ph.D. (or equivalent) no earlier than September 1, 2006. Fellowships will be awarded on the strength of a candidate’s proposed research project, the relationship of the project to the program’s theme, the candidate’s scholarly record, and the candidate’s ability to contribute to the intellectual life of the program.

The luxury goods trade in the Ottoman Empire and the Balkans in the 17th and 18th centuries;
Regional identities and forms of segregation in Early Modern South-Eastern Europe;
Social Elites in South-Eastern Europe;
Eligibility
A successful candidate should have:
A PhD in a relevant historical discipline;
Excellent knowledge of 2 foreign languages (preferably English and French). Knowledge of Greek, Turkish or Russian would be an asset;
Experience in archival research;

Fellowship
Four post-doctoral positions can be offered for a period of 2 years, with a monthly gross salary of EUR 2000. The winning candidates will sign a contract with the Host Institution (New Europe College). The contract will be drafted in accordance with the provisions of the Romanian Labour Law.

1 POSTDOCTORAL POSITION
starting 1 January 2016

German language expertise is not required but learning German is encouraged. Knowledge of Arabic and/or French is an advantage.
Our Offer
