GRANTS AND SCHOLARSHIPS / ГРАНТЫ И СТИПЕНДИИ
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
SHORT-TERM VISITS CALL
1.General information about the Tuning Academy and the Short-Term Visits Initiative
The International Tuning Academy has been established with the aim of making the results of all Tuning and Tuning-related projects accessible to the academic community and stipulating research on Tuning-related topics. The present call is launched by the Deusto headquarters of the Tuning Academy: Deusto International Tuning Academy (DITA).
In the framework of the different TUNING projects a methodology has been developed for (re-)designing, developing, and implementing first-, second- and third-cycle university degree programmes, as well as for evaluating and enhancing the quality of programmes of higher education. The TUNING methodology helps all the stakeholders understand higher education curricula and make them comparable. The five focus lines of the Tuning educational projects have been as follows:
- Generic competences,
- Subject-specific competences,
- The role of ECTS as an accumulation system and measuring students’ workload
- Approaches to learning, teaching, and assessment appropriate for competence-based learning
- The role of quality enhancement in the educational process (emphasizing systems based on internal institutional quality culture).
The research projects we are looking for will focus on one of these topics:
1) analysing and evaluating the impact produced by the Tuning projects at the level of particular higher education programmes/institutions/countries/regions;
2) approaches to learning, teaching and assessment of generic competences – concrete examples of what is done within higher education degrees accompanied by enhancement proposals based on both theoretical and empirical data;
3) staff development initiatives that facilitate implementation of competence-based approach – critical evaluation of their effectiveness and how well they meet the needs;
4) curriculum reform and incorporation of Tuning approach in institutional and national policies.
The Short-Term Visits Scholarship Scheme has been established in order to bring together academics who have already been exploring Tuning-related topics, and PhD students/junior academics interested in researching one of the four topics (1-4), thus further consolidating Tuning-related research as a distinct domain within the general area of higher education studies.
6 scholarships for 1-month research visits are offered for those already pursuing research or interested in undertaking studies in any of the four research topics* and interested in spending one month at DITA between October 2015 and June 2016. The aim is to facilitate access to information about the different Tuning projects’ outcomes and to initiate or consolidate international collaborations.
* If you believe that your research project is closely related to the TUNING lines but is not included in any of the four broad research topics indicated above, you may still apply and your application will be considered. However, research projects within the three research topics will be prioritized.
What is provided (apart from the funding)?
1) On-site access to DITA databases and library (project data; survey data, including data with restricted access; library specialized on Tuning-related topics);
2) Methodological advice on research topic; and
3) Practical and logistic support while in Bilbao.
No additional money for travel or congress participation will be made available to visiting researchers.
The health insurance is issued and paid for by the University of Deusto.
The return ticket is purchased by the visiting researcher and is then reimbursed (if the total cost does not exceed 500 euros) or partly reimbursed (up to the sum of 500 euros) by DITA. Any changes the researcher needs to make after the ticket has been purchased are to be covered by the researcher.
The cost of accommodation is transferred to the grantee upon his/her arrival to Bilbao and the grantee is then responsible for paying the accommodation fee to the accommodation provider directly.
GRADUATE FELLOWSHIP
University of Manitoba
Beginning with the 2009/2010 academic year, the University of Manitoba Graduate Fellowship (UMGF) was devolved to the unit level. A unit is typically a department, but in the case of non-departmentalized faculties (e.g., Kinesology and Recreation Management, Law, Music, Pharmacy, and Social Work) can refer to a faculty, or even a program (e.g., Applied Health, Disability Studies Peace and Conflict Studies). UMGFs were devolved to the unit level to increase the flexibility to whom and when these scholarships are awarded. Please check with your unit for details on how to be considered for a UMGF.
The UMGF is used to determine the recipients of the listed supplemental awards, which are meant to be held with the UMGF. The same process is used to upgrade new Master’s UMGF recipients to the Manitoba Graduate Scholarship for Master’s students. These supplemental award offers and MGS upgrades will occur in July of each year. Only students who have received an offer as of July will be included in the supplemental offers and upgrades.
Value
In the recent 2014-15 budget, the University allocated additional funds for graduate student support. This new allocation is being used to raise the value of the UMGF awards. The increase in value will be retroactive to May 1, 2014, and apply to students who hold an award (renewals) or have been offered an award.
The new values are applicable for a 12 month period, as follows:
PhD – $18,000
Master’s – $14,000
Eligibility Criteria
Academic standing: Students with a minimum GPA of 3.75 (above B+) at a recognized university based on a Bachelor, Masters, Graduate Diploma or a Doctoral degree. Please use admissions criteria in calculating GPA, i.e., last 60 credit hours or equivalent.
Citizenship: All students regardless of citizenship are eligible to apply. Canadian citizens and permanent residents are encouraged to apply to CIHR, NSERC and SSHRC scholarships, if there are eligible for funding from these research councils. Tricouncil eligible students who do not apply for a tricouncil award may be considered ineligible for a UMGF.
Fields of study: Students in all fields of graduate study (with the exception of those in the Faculty of Medicine and in the Master of Business Administration [MBA]) are eligible to apply.
Years of graduate study: Students are eligible to receive the UMGF for the first 24 months of their Master’s program and the first 48 months of their PhD program. Total maximum UMGF support for any individual graduate student is 48 months.
GRANTS AND SCHOLARSHIPS / ГРАНТЫ И СТИПЕНДИИ
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
SHORT-TERM VISITS CALL
1.General information about the Tuning Academy and the Short-Term Visits Initiative
The International Tuning Academy has been established with the aim of making the results of all Tuning and Tuning-related projects accessible to the academic community and stipulating research on Tuning-related topics. The present call is launched by the Deusto headquarters of the Tuning Academy: Deusto International Tuning Academy (DITA).
In the framework of the different TUNING projects a methodology has been developed for (re-)designing, developing, and implementing first-, second- and third-cycle university degree programmes, as well as for evaluating and enhancing the quality of programmes of higher education. The TUNING methodology helps all the stakeholders understand higher education curricula and make them comparable. The five focus lines of the Tuning educational projects have been as follows:
- Generic competences,
- Subject-specific competences,
- The role of ECTS as an accumulation system and measuring students’ workload
- Approaches to learning, teaching, and assessment appropriate for competence-based learning
- The role of quality enhancement in the educational process (emphasizing systems based on internal institutional quality culture).
The research projects we are looking for will focus on one of these topics:
1) analysing and evaluating the impact produced by the Tuning projects at the level of particular higher education programmes/institutions/countries/regions;
2) approaches to learning, teaching and assessment of generic competences – concrete examples of what is done within higher education degrees accompanied by enhancement proposals based on both theoretical and empirical data;
3) staff development initiatives that facilitate implementation of competence-based approach – critical evaluation of their effectiveness and how well they meet the needs;
4) curriculum reform and incorporation of Tuning approach in institutional and national policies.
The Short-Term Visits Scholarship Scheme has been established in order to bring together academics who have already been exploring Tuning-related topics, and PhD students/junior academics interested in researching one of the four topics (1-4), thus further consolidating Tuning-related research as a distinct domain within the general area of higher education studies.
6 scholarships for 1-month research visits are offered for those already pursuing research or interested in undertaking studies in any of the four research topics* and interested in spending one month at DITA between October 2015 and June 2016. The aim is to facilitate access to information about the different Tuning projects’ outcomes and to initiate or consolidate international collaborations.
* If you believe that your research project is closely related to the TUNING lines but is not included in any of the four broad research topics indicated above, you may still apply and your application will be considered. However, research projects within the three research topics will be prioritized.
What is provided (apart from the funding)?
1) On-site access to DITA databases and library (project data; survey data, including data with restricted access; library specialized on Tuning-related topics);
2) Methodological advice on research topic; and
3) Practical and logistic support while in Bilbao.
2. Types of candidates/Eligibility criteria
The Short-Term Visits Scholarships can be granted to:
1) young researcher enrolled in doctoral programmes elsewhere and focusing on a topic related to DITA’s current priority research lines (see above);
2) scholars holding a PhD and currently actively engaged in post-doctoral research on a topic related to DITA’s current priority research lines (see above), and
3) university staff interested in comparative case-studies of the implementation and impact of the Tuning approach in at least two higher education institutions.
There are no limitations as to country of residence, nationality, age.
3. Application procedure
In order to be considered for a Short-Term Visit Scholarship you need to
(1) complete the Online Application Form in English and
(2) email your CV to mariayarosh@deusto. es (EuroPass style, in English; with the “YourName(s).YourSurname(s)_CV” document name and “Short-Term Visit Scholarships Application_CV_YourName(s).YourSurname(s)” email subject line).
The Online Application Form does not allow partial completion (saving part of information and returning to the Form later to continue its completion). Therefore, you need to have the following texts ready before you start completing the Form:
1) A very short summary of your Research Proposal (max. 7 lines or 560 characters with spaces)
2) A more detailed Study Visit Plan (max. 3 pages with 1.5 spacing or 8,641 characters with spaces). For elements to be covered, read the respective Online Application Form instructions carefully (“Study Visit Plan” section).
For instructions on how to create a EuroPass CV and the English-language template, see http://europass.cedefop.europa.eu/en/documents/curriculum-vitae/templates-instructions.
The deadline for submitting applications is 7 June 2015. No applications completed after 23:59 Central European Time on 7 June 2015 will be considered.
4. Selection principles
An international selection panel will evaluate the applications taking into consideration the following criteria:
1) Quality of the research project proposed and its appropriateness in terms of DITA’s research priorities;
2) Research record of the candidate;
3) Potential for long-term collaboration.
No certificate of English proficiency is required from candidates, but level of English domain will be taken into consideration because successful candidates must be able to produce academic publications in English and write the Final Research Report in English.
No reasons for decisions will be given.
5. Notification
You will first be notified by email of the reception of your Online Application Form and CV. Only those candidates who have both completed the Online Application Form and emailed EuroPass CV will be notified.
Next, all candidates will be notified of the decision by email (September 2015). Unsuccessful candidates will be welcome to reapply for the next call.
6. Handling of personal information
Personal data of applicants and grantees will be stored electronically in DITA’s computer files only to the extent necessary for the administration of the applications and scholarships. Applications of unsuccessful candidates will be destroyed after one year.
7. Funding
The Short-Term Visits Scholarships consist of health insurance for the 4 weeks, full or partial reimbursement of the travel costs for a return ticket (up to 500 euros), and free-of-charge accommodation. No additional money for travel or congress participation will be made available to visiting researchers.
The health insurance is issued and paid for by the University of Deusto.
The return ticket is purchased by the visiting researcher and is then reimbursed (if the total cost does not exceed 500 euros) or partly reimbursed (up to the sum of 500 euros) by DITA. Any changes the researcher needs to make after the ticket has been purchased are to be covered by the researcher.
The cost of accommodation is transferred to the grantee upon his/her arrival to Bilbao and the grantee is then responsible for paying the accommodation fee to the accommodation provider directly.
If the visiting researcher does not comply with the Study Visit Plan and requirements as stipulated in “Visiting Researcher Agreement” (to be signed upon arrival in Bilbao) the scholarship may be cancelled and the visiting researcher will be obliged to reimburse the cost of both monthly allowance and travel.
8. What is required of successful grantees
Successful grantees must:
1) inform DITA of any documents they need from DITA in order to apply for a Spanish visa, if relevant;

4) agree on their research proposal and schedule taking into account the selection committee feedback, as well as regularly update Maria Yarosh on their research progress before coming to Bilbao and in the period between the end of research visit and research completion;
5) present the main outcomes of the research visit first during the last week of their Short-Term Visit and again once the research is completed;
6) complete an online Feedback Form two-three weeks after completion of research visit;
7) submit Final Report upon completion of the research (this will be kept confidential by DITA until you have published your research outcomes, if necessary; and will be made available on the Tuning Academy website afterwards); this Report needs to be written in English;
8) notify DITA of any publications and/or presentation on Tuning-related topics during and after the visit; and
9) acknowledge DITA Short-Term Visit Scholarship Scheme in all such publications and/or presentations.
9. Contact details
For any questions, doubts or queries, please contact Maria Yarosh at mariayarosh@deusto.es.
10. Self-funding researchers
Applications for self-funded research visits are accepted anytime. Those interested should follow the application guidelines and their applications will be considered against the same criteria as applications for Short-Term Visit Scholarships. Self-funding researchers will need to comply with the requirements 1, 3, 5, 6 and 8 stated in section “8 What is required of successful grantees”. GRADUATE FELLOWSHIP
University of Manitoba
Beginning with the 2009/2010 academic year, the University of Manitoba Graduate Fellowship (UMGF) was devolved to the unit level. A unit is typically a department, but in the case of non-departmentalized faculties (e.g., Kinesology and Recreation Management, Law, Music, Pharmacy, and Social Work) can refer to a faculty, or even a program (e.g., Applied Health, Disability Studies Peace and Conflict Studies). UMGFs were devolved to the unit level to increase the flexibility to whom and when these scholarships are awarded. Please check with your unit for details on how to be considered for a UMGF.
The UMGF is used to determine the recipients of the listed supplemental awards, which are meant to be held with the UMGF. The same process is used to upgrade new Master’s UMGF recipients to the Manitoba Graduate Scholarship for Master’s students. These supplemental award offers and MGS upgrades will occur in July of each year. Only students who have received an offer as of July will be included in the supplemental offers and upgrades.
Value
In the recent 2014-15 budget, the University allocated additional funds for graduate student support. This new allocation is being used to raise the value of the UMGF awards. The increase in value will be retroactive to May 1, 2014, and apply to students who hold an award (renewals) or have been offered an award.
The new values are applicable for a 12 month period, as follows:
PhD – $18,000
Master’s – $14,000
Eligibility Criteria
Academic standing: Students with a minimum GPA of 3.75 (above B+) at a recognized university based on a Bachelor, Masters, Graduate Diploma or a Doctoral degree. Please use admissions criteria in calculating GPA, i.e., last 60 credit hours or equivalent.
Citizenship: All students regardless of citizenship are eligible to apply. Canadian citizens and permanent residents are encouraged to apply to CIHR, NSERC and SSHRC scholarships, if there are eligible for funding from these research councils. Tricouncil eligible students who do not apply for a tricouncil award may be considered ineligible for a UMGF.
Fields of study: Students in all fields of graduate study (with the exception of those in the Faculty of Medicine and in the Master of Business Administration [MBA]) are eligible to apply.
Years of graduate study: Students are eligible to receive the UMGF for the first 24 months of their Master’s program and the first 48 months of their PhD program. Total maximum UMGF support for any individual graduate student is 48 months.
