DOCTORAL RESEARCH POSITIONS "BALTIC BORDERLANDS: SHIFTING BOUNDARIES OF MIND AND CULTURE IN THE BORDERLANDS OF THE BALTIC SEA REGION"

The University of Greifswald has received funding from the German
Research Foundation (DFG) for the International Research Training Group
"Baltic Borderlands: Shifting Boundaries of Mind and Culture in the
Borderlands of the Baltic Sea Region" and now invites applications from
well-qualified candidates for one of seven PhD studentships. This
announcement addresses particularly applicants from history, art
history, Scandinavian, Slavonic and Baltic languages and literature,
political science, theology as well as cultural studies.
The International Research Training Group was initiated by the
University of Greifswald, the University of Lund (Sweden), and the
University of Tartu (Estonia) to provide a common programme for doctoral
students and post-doctoral researchers. Currently, 20 PhD students and 5
post-docs are being trained in Greifswald, Lund and Tartu. In
Greifswald, the subject areas offered include history, Baltic, Slavonic
and Scandinavian languages and literature, political science, and
systematic theology. Over and beyond history, theology, and Slavonic
studies in Lund and Tartu, there are also offerings in ethnology,
geography, and communication studies.
Applications are invited from candidates willing to conduct research
relating to bordering processes in one of the following themes:
1. The emergence and transformation of historical borderlands
2. The cultural contexts of cross-border action in borderland areas
3. The economic permeability and persistence of borders
4. New border regimes: The political dimension of border formation and
The programme of study within the International Research Training Group
includes relevant courses held locally at each university as well as
tri-national workshops/conferences in Greifswald, Lund and Tartu.
Furthermore, it is obligatory that each PhD student will spend 6-12
months as a visiting researcher at the partner universities. The costs
of such research visits will be partly covered by a mobility grant
awarded in addition to the monthly payment.
- applicants should hold a good first degree and normally have, or be
about to obtain, a Masters qualification in a discipline relevant to the
- exposé for a research project in the above mentioned fields (max. 10
- good written and spoken English. Knowledge of German, Estonian or
Swedish is desirable but not essential.
The willingness and ability of the candidate to participate actively in
an international research programme is a precondition. The programme of
study is compulsory for all PhD students in the International Research
Training Group. Applications of women are explicitly welcomed. In areas
where women are underrepresented, they will be given pre-ferential
consideration when candidates are of equal merit. Applicants with a
disability will be given preference when candidates are of equal merit,
as stipulated in SGB IX (§ 2, paragraph 2, 3).
The IRTG Baltic Borderlands is a family friendly institution and

Value of the contract: about EUR 18.000 p.a. (after tax, according to

PHD SCHOLARSHIPS FOR ITALIAN AND INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS AT SCUOLA NORMALE SUPERIORE IN ITALY, 2015-2016
Scuola Normale Superiore is awarding up to 86 fully funded PhD scholarships for Italian and International citizens at university campuses (Pisa and Florence). Scholarship includes tuition, fees, and a cost-of living stipend (14,187 euro per year, plus free meals). The PhD courses have a duration of three years, except for those in “Biophysical Sciences” and in “Neurosciences”, which have a duration of four years. All courses will start on 1st November 2015. Admissions are based on students’ academic work and interviews. The application deadline is 31 August 2015 for the autumn session.

Eligibility: Applications for admission are invited from candidates who, irrespective of their citizenship, have an Italian laurea magistrale or an equivalent degree from outside Italy, or who expect to have obtained the degree required for admission by 31st October 2015: failure to obtain the degree by this date will disqualify the candidate for admission. Degrees from outside Italy will be checked, merely for the purposes of the selection process, by the call commission, in accordance with the prevailing legislation in Italy and in the country where the degree was issued and with any international treaties or agreements for the recognition of degrees for the continuation of studies. Admission to the call is restricted to candidates who:
-were born after the 31st October 1985;
-have no past criminal charges against them resulting in a prison term of more than three years;
-have not been subject to the disciplinary measure of “expulsion” as specified in article 20 of the didactic and internal regulations of the SNS;
-are not in possession of a research doctorate issued by an Italian university, and in any case have never benefitted from a scholarship to attend a research doctorate course in Italy.
-The admission interviews can be done in Italian or English; the candidate’s level of competence in the language he is to be tested in must be stated in the application, with reference to the EUROPASS language grid.

Duration of award(s): The PhD courses have a duration of three years, except for those in “Biophysical Sciences” and in “Neurosciences”, which have a duration of four years. All courses will start on 1st November 2015. The scholarship for the PhD course will be paid in twelve deferred equal monthly installments, subject to the fulfillment of students’ academic duties.
What does it cover? All students admitted to the PhD program receive full financial support. This includes tuition, fees, and a cost-of living stipend (14,187 euro per year, plus free meals). Support is independent of need provided a student remains in good academic standing and is making satisfactory progress towards his/her PhD degree. All students will be assigned further funding for their research activity and travel.
Selection Criteria: For the evaluation of candidates’ aptitude for scientific research and their basic preparedness to tackle the course programme, each admission commission will have a hundred points at its disposal for each candidate, sixty for the evaluation of their qualifications and forty for the interview. Candidates will be admitted to the interview if they receive at least forty points in the evaluation of their qualifications. To pass the interview, candidates must attain at least thirty points. Suitability for the PhD course is subject to passing the interview. The qualifications will be evaluated as a whole.
Notification: The outcome of the evaluation of qualifications and admission to the interview will be published by the 16th September 2015 for the autumn session. The interviews will take place at the SNS sites on the following dates: spring session: starting on 21st September 2015.

UBC PUBLIC SCHOLARS AWARD FOR CANADIAN AND INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS, 2015
The University of British Columbia (UBC) is inviting applications for scholars award from Canadian and international students. These awards are available for PhD students who are interested in explicitly linking their doctoral work to an arena of public benefit and integrating broader and more career-relevant forms of scholarship into their doctoral education process. Funding is available for up to 50 students in 2015-16. Up to $10,000 per student is available to support innovative dissertation scholarship which the student would otherwise be unable to pursue. -Quality of proposed scholarship. The following factors will be taken into account: the work requires a high level of expertise in a discipline(s) and/or methodology; the goals are clearly defined, realistic, and identify important questions; adequate preparation for and understanding of the subject is indicated; appropriate methods are proposed to achieve the goals; plans to document and disseminate the work are appropriate and effective and the work has significance and is likely to contribute positively to the public good
-Need for alternative funding sources.
-Consideration will also be given to breadth of the initiative across disciplines.

6 ZIF MARIE CURIE 2-YEAR POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS

The University of Konstanz belongs to the universities in Germany whose “Future concepts for top-class research at universities” is promoted within the framework of the Excellence Initiative of the German federal and state governments.
The Zukunftskolleg is a central scientific institution of the University of Konstanz for the promotion of young researchers in the natural sciences, humanities and social sciences, and is an integral component of the institutional strategy “Model Konstanz — Towards a Culture of Creativity.” The Zukunftskolleg forms a platform for interdisciplinary discourse between distinguished researchers in Germany and abroad, and provides them with resources for obtaining extramural funding.
The Zukunftskolleg of the University of Konstanz offers up to
six (6) ZIF Marie Curie 2-year Postdoctoral Fellowships
(any discipline represented at the University of Konstanz)
(Salary Scale 13 TV-L)
to develop and implement individual research projects. This call for applications is part of the Zukunftskolleg Incoming Fellowship Program (ZIF) and is financed by the Seventh Framework Program (FP7) Marie Curie Actions – People (co-funding of regional, national and international programs), the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the University of Konstanz. The rules and ethical principles for the FP7 and the DFG guidelines apply.
Marie Curie Fellowships are available to researchers regardless of their nationality and field of research. They are intended to encourage the transnational mobility of top-level researchers in order to integrate them within the European research area.
The Fellowships will begin on February 1, 2016, and end on January 31, 2018.
The Zukunftskolleg provides a professional infrastructure and an appropriate workplace for conducting research. Fellows have the opportunity to benefit from a variety of career development measures, including the University of Konstanz’s Academic Staff Development and Research Support offices. Fellows may nominate recognized experts in their field of research as senior Fellows, who will be invited to Konstanz for a research stay of one to nine months. Each Postdoctoral Fellow receives a mobility allowance and a research allowance. Furthermore, a pool is available for funding cooperative projects, research assistants, travel, and equipment purchases. Each Fellow is a member of both a university department and the Zukunftskolleg. A Mentoring Committee supports each Fellow in her / his career development. This committee consists of an experienced researcher from the Fellow’s research field within the university department, as well as an advanced Research Fellow of the Zukunftskolleg.
The target group consists of excellent researchers at the postdoctoral level, leadership abilities and a capacity for teamwork, so that they can reasonably be expected to take up leading roles in academia.
Applicant Requirements for this Fellowship include:
Candidates must be in possession of a doctoral degree (PhD thesis submitted and defended) at the moment of the decision within the second committee meeting – September 28-29, 2015;
Candidates must not hold a permanent position, a professorship, or have an habilitation or equivalent (Venia legendi);
Candidates with their own position funded by another program, which can be transferred to Konstanz, are also eligible (other EU funding is not eligible);
Applicants must propose a research project that ties in with a discipline represented at the University of Konstanz. Applicants should contact potential mentors (Local Hosts) among the researchers at the University of Konstanz in order to ensure appropriate affiliation. Support from the department strengthens the application;
Applicants must have had their main residence and worked outside Germany for 24 months or more during the three years prior to the application deadline (timeframe: May 19, 2012- May 18, 2015);
All ethical issues raised by a proposed project (if applicable) must be described in the project outline. The candidate should explain how these will be addressed, so as to conform with national and Seventh Framework Program (FP7) ethical principles. Fellows have an opportunity to teach. They are expected to participate actively in the regular weekly meetings of the Zukunftskolleg and to have their place of residence in Konstanz.
Fellows are selected on the basis of their academic excellence, the quality and topicality of their research project outline, personal aptitude with regard to leadership and team skills, and interdis-ciplinary interest. International experience in teaching or research, and a strong interest in inter-disciplinary topics are desirable.
Applications are evaluated in a two-stage process:
Eligibility check and pre-selection based on the written application;
Further selection based on independent peer reviews.
Candidates will be informed of the final decision and the evaluation of their own strengths and weaknesses after the second selection phase at the beginning of October 2015.

KENNAN INSTITUTE GEORGE F. KENNAN FELLOWSHIP (GFK) IN USA, 2015
The Kennan Institute is offering three month residential fellowship for U.S., Russian, and Ukrainian citizens. The fellowship offers a monthly stipend of $3,200, research facilities, and computer access. While conducting research, the George F. Kennan Fellows are expected to actively participate in discussions with the policy and academic communities, including speaking engagements at the Wilson Center as well as potentially outside of Washington D.C., and attending meetings, conferences, and other activities organized by the Kennan Institute and Wilson Center. The application deadline is 1 September 2015.
Study Subject(s): Among the aims of the new fellowships are to build bridges between traditional academia and the policy world, as well as to maintain and increase collaboration among researchers.

Scholarship Description: The Kennan Institute seeks fellowship applicants from diverse, policy-oriented sectors such as media, business, local government, law, civil society, and academia to examine important political, social, economic, cultural, and historical issues in Russia, Ukraine, and the region. Duration of award(s): George F. Kennan Fellows will be based at the Wilson Center in Washington, D.C. for three-month residencies. Awardees are expected to begin their three-month appointments within six months of accepting the fellowship.
What does it cover? The George F. Kennan Fellowship offers a monthly stipend of $3,200, research facilities, and computer access. Fellows will receive access to the Library of Congress, National Archives, and policy research centers in Washington, D.C., as well as the opportunity to meet with key experts and officials at the State Department, USAID, Department of Defense, and Congress.
Selection Criteria: The Project proposal is the most important element in the selection process. It is essential that you make your project clear to individuals outside your own field and explain its broader implications, including policy relevance. The elements requested below should be incorporated into the text:
-a detailed description of the topic and its policy relevance beyond the interests of the specific field of study
-the originality of the proposed study
-the basic ideas and hypotheses
-the methods or approaches to be used
-a brief discussion of how you or your project will foster communication between the world of ideas and the world of public affairs.

-Institutional commitment and demonstrated synergy between applicant and institutional strategic priorities: Demonstrated commitment of the institution to support development of the applicant’s research and leadership capacity through institutional support (funding, facilities, equipment, etc.) and professional development; Demonstrated alignment and synergy between the applicant’s research ambitions and the institution’s potential to benefit strategically from engagement with the applicant (alignment with institution’s strategic priorities).

Scholarship Description: The international Leo Baeck Fellowship program is aimed at PhD students working on a dissertation on the history and culture of German-speaking Jewry. In addition to financial support for one year, the program includes the opportunity for scientific exchange at regular meetings – jointly organized by the German National Academic Foundation and the Leo Baeck Institute London. The program will appeal to doctoral students conducting their research in several countries. It is open to students from all nationalities and all universities worldwide.
Number of award(s): For the academic year 2016/17 up to twelve scholarships will be awarded.
Duration of award(s): Fellowship period begins October 2016 and ends in September 2017. Regular meetings and a common intranet support the scholarship holders is mutually present their projects and to discuss the methods and results of research. Working languages ??are German and English. Graduating students who work on their dissertation at universities in Germany and will file an extension of the delivery period can apply after the first year, provided that the appropriate Academic Foundation are funding.

Министерство культуры Российской Федерации сообщает о проведении Второго Всероссийского конкурса молодых ученых в области искусств и культуры.
Конкурс проводится ежегодно среди студентов и аспирантов образовательных организаций высшего образования, научно-исследовательских учреждений в возрасте до 30 лет на момент проведения конкурса.
Задача Конкурса – поддержка молодых исследователей, повышение интереса к научно-исследовательской деятельности среди молодежи. Конкурс способствует интеграции образовательной и научной (научно-исследовательской) деятельности в высшем образовании, использованию новых знаний и достижений науки и техники в образовательной деятельности.
Конкурс проводится по следующим номинациям:
Театральное, хореографическое и цирковое искусство
Кино-, теле- и другие экранные искусства
Изобразительное и декоративно-прикладное искусство
Архитектура и дизайн
Музееведение, консервация и реставрация историко-культурных объектов
Теория и история искусства и культуры
Конкурс проводится в два тура:
- первый тур Конкурса проводится образовательными организациями высшего образования и научно-исследовательскими учреждениями, реализующими соответствующие образовательные программы в области искусств и культуры. Порядок проведения первого тура Конкурса среди образовательных организаций высшего образования и научно-исследовательских учреждений определяется Учеными советами организаций.
Для участия конкурсантов во втором туре Конкурса образовательным организациям высшего образования и научно-исследовательским учреждениям необходимо направить в срок до 1 октября 2015 г. в Оргкомитет конкурса: 125993, ГСП-3, Москва, Малый Гнездниковский пер., д.7/6, стр.1,2, директору Департамента науки и образования Министерства культуры Российской Федерации Аракеловой Александре Олеговне (с пометкой «Всероссийский конкурс молодых ученых в области искусств и культуры» и указанием номинации) документы, согласно перечню, изложенному в Положении Конкурса.
От каждой образовательной организации высшего образования и научно-исследовательского учреждения для участия во втором туре Конкурса может быть представлено не более 3 кандидатур.
По итогам Конкурса проводится конференция молодых ученых и осуществляется подготовка сборника научных работ.
Лауреаты Конкурса награждаются дипломами и премиями (денежное вознаграждение). Обладатель основной премии по указанным в положении Конкурса номинациям (или группа соавторов) награждается премией в размере 120 000 рублей. Размер поощрительной премии определяет Оргкомитет Конкурса в пределах премиального фонда.
