2 ERC-FUNDED PHD SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE, ENERGY ETHICS AT UNIVERSITY OF ST ANDREWS
The Department of Social Anthropology at the University of St Andrews (UK) is advertising 2 PhD scholarships (4 years, full time, 100% UK/EU fee waiver with maintenance stipend of approx. £14,296/year (equivalent to a RCUK stipend) and conference/research expenses) to participate in an ERC-funded research project on the ethics of oil. The start date is September 2017.
Deadline for application: 16 January 2017
This project entitled "The Ethics of Oil: Finance Moralities and Environmental Politics in the Global Oil Economy (ENERGYETHICS)" offers an exciting opportunity for 2 outstanding graduates to join a major anthropological research project funded by the European Research Council - as part of the conventional track for a PhD in Social Anthropology at University of St Andrews. The project is a comparative study of how people in positions of influence within the global oil economy make financial and ethical valuations of oil. Ethnographic fieldwork will be carried out with oil companies in the US and Norway, energy analysts in the UK and the US, and fossil fuel divestment movements in Germany and the UK. Taking our starting point in people's own perceptions of and direct involvement in the oil economy, we aim to understand the relationship between oil, money and climate change. We will ask: What is the value of oil? How do such valuations, understood as both financial and ethical, intersect and inform the making of the global energy economy in oil? To what extent can oil be an important industrial resource, a profit-yielding investment opportunity and an undesired pollutant that brings about irreversible climate impacts?
We are seeking prospective candidates with an existing interest in fields such as economic life, morality and ethics, energy and climate change, corporations and organisations. Applicants are encouraged to contribute their own provisional research ideas in the form of a proposal as part of their application. Projects will have ethnographic fieldwork at their core, but may also draw on other methodologies, including archival and visual media work.
Successful candidate 1 will explore convergences of oil production with national welfare agendas and climate change concerns in Norway. The research will involve 15 months of fieldwork and the candidate must be able to/willing to learn Norwegian.
Successful candidate 2 will examine how divestment projects in Germany and the UK intersect with oil industry vulnerability and visions for the future The research will involve 15 months of fieldwork and the candidate must be able to/willing to learn German.
Requirements:
The successful candidates must hold a good degree in Anthropology, or related field. They should have strong communication and organisational skills with a passionate interest in carrying out ethnographic research on issues related to oil. They should be willing to work in a team and contribute to public events, publications and limited teaching alongside their individual projects.
Application:
Prospective candidates are encouraged to contact the Principal Investigator Dr Mette M. High at mmh20@st-andrews.ac.uk<mailto:mmh20@st-andrews.ac.uk> for further information about the project in advance of submitting applications.
Applications must be submitted electronically to mmh20@st-andrews.ac.uk<mailto:mmh20@st-andrews.ac.uk> before 16 January 2017 with the message title "PhD Scholarship application 1" for the project on oil production in Norway or the message title "PhD Scholarship application 2" for the project on the divestment from fossil fuel movements in the UK and Germany. The following documents must be attached to the email in 3 separate PDF files:
1) A research proposal that explains how they would carry out the PhD project on either oil production in Norway or divestment movements in the UK and Germany. The proposal will include information on methodological strategies, possible theoretical developments and relevant literature (maximum 3000 words).
2) A full curriculum vitae with detailed information on degree results and language skills, with the names and contact details of 2 referees available to be contacted.
3) A writing sample (e.g. essay or MA thesis chapter) showing the applicant's ability to use ethnographic methods and/or to theorise anthropologically (maximum 10,000 words).
Short-listed candidates will be interviewed in person at University of St Andrews or remotely via Skype in early February 2017 and results will be notified by mid-February.
Successful candidates will be expected to start in September 2017.
For more information, please contact the Principal Investigator Dr Mette M. High, mmh20@st-andrews.ac.uk

MASTER`S PROGRAMME "APPLIED AND INTERDISCIPLINARY HISTORY “USABLE PASTS”", HIGHER SCHOOL OF ECONOMICS, ST. PETERSBURG
by Elena Kochetkova
On November 1, applications opened for 2017 admissions to undergraduate and graduate programmes at HSE. This year, a new online application system has been introduced to simplify the procedure for international applicants.
The aim of the Master`s Programme "Applied and Interdisciplinary history “Usable Pasts”" is to train highly-skilled specialists to succeed in non-academic positions that demand historical expertise or further excel in the pursuit of their academic career. The program has a practical approach, offering both traditional, research-related training methods as well as the development of practical tools pertinent to applied history. On the one hand, the programme is designed to prepare students for work in the public sphere right after graduation. On the other hand it produces graduates with a strong research background in preparation for an academic career and trains them in new historical approaches and methodologies to ensure their success when applying to PhD programmes.
The programme offers an innovative combination of fundamental and applied training in order to provide graduates with an essential knowledge of global, comparative and transnational history as well as the specific expertise and skills related to the practice of applied history.
It provides the theoretical and interdisciplinary training necessary to the practice of applied history:
· historical memory and identity policy, theories of nationalism, imperial and colonial studies and postcolonial forms of identity, history in national, colonial and postcolonial discourses;
· environmental and technological history, history of science, history of law, economic history;
· historical heritage, public museums and the media, archeaology and policy of historical heritage, historical urban studies.

2 December 2016
Level of education
University
Salary indication
€2,191 to €2,672 gross per month
Closing date
16 January 2017
Hours
38 hours per week
Vacancy number
16-562
The Amsterdam School for Heritage, Memory and Material Culture (AHM), one of six research schools of the Faculty of Humanities, has a vacant PhD position as part of the European Training Network Critical Heritage Studies and the Future of Europe - Towards an integrated, interdisciplinary and transnational training model in cultural heritage research and management (CHEurope), Theme 2 ‘Curating the City’.
Job description
The 'CHEurope' project is a PhD training program in critical heritage studies supported by the EU under the Marie Sklodowska-Curie actions (MSCA) - Innovative Training Networks (ITN). It is the result of a collaboration between universities, heritage institutions and museums in Sweden, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Spain, Portugal, Belgium and Italy.
CHEurope will train 15 Early Stage Researchers (ESR) under five themes: Heritage Futures, Curating the City, Digital Heritage, Heritage and Wellbeing, and Management and Citizen Participation. Starting in April 2017, the recruited ESRs shall be appointed with an employment contract of 36 months duration, plus mobility and family allowance (if applicable). The recruited ESRs will benefit from secondments in museums and heritage institutions, and from taking active part in a structured, international program of training workshops, summer schools, and conferences.
As part of CHEurope’s theme ‘Curating the City’, the Amsterdam School for Heritage, Memory and Material Culture (AHM) invites applications for one PhD position (ESR6) on ‘Museums Curating the City’. This research project will explore the ways in which museums curate a city facing a host of traumatic memories and approach questions of redress and repair in relation to 'wounded' communities. The ESR will be seconded in Amsterdam’s National Museum of World Culture (or Tropenmuseum) and the Jewish Historical Museum. While the PhD does not have to focus on Amsterdam, it is recommended that applicants propose projects which include these collaborations as structural component and make the best of them. Given these institutional collaborations, proposed projects may well focus on post-colonialism and Holocaust memory, or the voids in museum representations (refugees and migration) in Amsterdam, but other topics will be considered as well. Crucially, proposed projects must engage the following questions: How do museums curate the wounds of a city’s past? How do they respond to its silences and marginalisations? How do they act as renewed public sphere, and how publics (and counter publics) are included, or excluded, in their representations and ‘inscriptions’ of the city? Also, instead of focusing on a single museum, this research trajectory will consider a broader museum landscape and the diverse narrations and inscriptions of the city that these museums produce.
Tasks of the PhD candidate will include:
completion and defence of a PhD thesis within the period of appointment;
regular presentations of intermediate research results at workshops and conferences;
participation in the training program of the CHEurope project and the UvA Graduate School of Humanities;
participation in meetings of the host institutes;
co-organisation of expert meetings and an international conference;
publication of at least one peer-reviewed article.
Requirements
A relevant Masters degree, e.g. in conservation, anthropology, art history, museum studies or an equivalent academic degree in the humanities or social sciences;
the ability to speak, read, and write in competent, academic English;
knowledge of Dutch is not a requirement but will be considered a positive factor for the selection;
willingness to be seconded in the partner organisations (National Museum of World Cultures, Jewish Historical Museum);
high research abilities, as testified by your previous academic record, particularly by the quality of your masters-level thesis;
motivation;
creativity and high level of independency;
affinity with work in an interdisciplinary and highly international environment;
willingness and proven ability to work in a team;
willingness to relocate to (the vicinity of) Amsterdam;
in light of the mobility requirements set by the European Commission for this project: at the time of their recruitment, candidates must not have legally resided or carried out their main activity in the Netherlands for more than 12 months in the 3 years prior to taking up the position (short stays such as holidays are not counted);
candidates must fulfil the definition of an Early-Stage Researcher (ESR) set by the European Commission. At the time of recruitment, ESRs shall be in the first four years (full-time equivalent) of their research career and have not been awarded a doctoral degree. Research experience is calculated from the date a researcher has obtained the qualification (Masters or equivalent) allowing her/him to embark on a doctorate. Part-time research experience will be counted pro-rata.
The project is committed to increasing diversity in the field of heritage research. It welcomes applications from women, LGBT researchers, members of minority groups, and individuals with disabilities.

The first contract will be for 12 months, an extension for the following 24 months pending a positive performance evaluation. The intended starting date of the contract is 1 April 2017. The Amsterdam School for Heritage, Memory and Material Culture (AHM), one of six research schools of the Faculty of Humanities, has a vacant PhD position as part of the European Training Network Critical Heritage Studies and the Future of Europe - Towards an integrated, interdisciplinary and transnational training model in cultural heritage research and management (CHEurope), Theme 5 ‘Heritage management and citizen participation in a multi-cultural world’.

The recruited ESRs will benefit from secondments in museums and heritage institutions, and from taking active part in a structured, international program of training workshops, summer schools, and conferences.
As part of CHEurope’s theme ‘Heritage Management and Citizen Participation’, the Amsterdam School for Heritage, Memory and Material Culture (AHM) invites applications for one PhD position (ESR15) on ‘Counter-heritage’: critical management approaches to heritage access’. This project will focus on the idea of ‘participation’ and analyse management practices at several heritage sites and museums that aim to promote a new kind of heritage, one more inclusive of pasts and cultural practices traditionally excluded from public representation. The ESR will be seconded in two Amsterdam institutions, and, while the PhD does not have to focus on Amsterdam, it is recommended that applicants propose projects which include these collaborations as structural component and make the best of them. One such institution is Imagine IC, an organisation based in multicultural Amsterdam East that preserves, archives and displays migrant, postcolonial and youth heritage, with a special focus on intangible heritage. The other is the Amsterdam Museum, which has the largest historical and art-historical collection illustrating the history of the metropolitan city of Amsterdam. These institutions purport to rework the authorized heritage discourse and to overcome its blind spots and gaps by involving different publics and counter-publics. Building on these collaborations, the aim of this PhD project is to examine the dilemmas, contradictions and conflicts that are faced by those experts who want to change heritage from within by doing participation. How much ‘participation’ is allowed within the current heritage regime? How do traditional understandings of expertise change with the growing involvement of the public and other value systems in heritage? How does funding play a role in these processes? The study will adopt a multidisciplinary methodology combining anthropological and sociological approaches with heritage studies.
Tasks of the PhD candidate will include:
completion and defence of a PhD thesis within the period of appointment;
regular presentations of intermediate research results at workshops and conferences;
participation in the training program of the CHEurope project and the UvA Graduate School of Humanities;
co-organisation of expert meetings and an international conference;
publication of at least one peer-reviewed article.

ERC-FUNDED PHD SCHOLARSHIPS IN THE DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL ANTHROPOLOGY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ST ANDREWS
PhD Supervisor: Dr Mette M. High
Funding Status: PhD scholarships (4 years, full time, 100% UK/EU fee waiver with maintenance stipend of approx. £14,296/year (equivalent to a RCUK stipend) and conference/research expenses)
Title: PhD Scholarships in Social Anthropology
The Department of Social Anthropology at the University of St Andrews (UK) invites applications for 2 PhD scholarships (4 years, full time, 100% UK/EU fee waiver with maintenance stipend of approx. £14,296/year (equivalent to a RCUK stipend) and conference/research expenses) to participate in an ERC-funded research project on the ethics of oil. The start date is September 2017.
Deadline for application: 16 January 2017
This project entitled “The Ethics of Oil: Finance Moralities and Environmental Politics in the Global Oil Economy (ENERGYETHICS)” offers an exciting opportunity for 2 outstanding graduates to join a major anthropological research project funded by the European Research Council – as part of the conventional track for a PhD in Social Anthropology at University of St Andrews. Taking our starting point in people’s own perceptions of and direct involvement in the oil economy, we aim to understand the relationship between oil, money and climate change.
Successful candidate 2 will examine how divestment projects in Germany and the UK intersect with oil industry vulnerability and visions for the future. The research will involve 15 months of fieldwork and the candidate must be able to/willing to learn German.
High at mmh20@st-andrews.ac.uk for further information about the project in advance of submitting applications.
Applications must be submitted electronically to mmh20@st-andrews.ac.uk before 16 January 2017 with the message title “PhD Scholarship application 1” for the project on oil production in Norway or the message title “PhD Scholarship application 2” for the project on the divestment from fossil fuel movements in the UK and Germany.
3) A writing sample (e.g. essay or MA thesis chapter) showing the applicant’s ability to use ethnographic methods and/or to theorise anthropologically (maximum 10,000 words).

POSTDOC POSITION IN ERC PROJECT "PROCESSING CITIZENSHIP"
The Department of Science, Technology, and Policy Studies (STePS) <https://www.utwente.nl/bms/steps/>, Faculty of Behavioural, Management and Social sciences <https://www.utwente.nl/en/bms/> at the University of Twente is looking for a Postdoc with a background in Ethnography of borders and/or migration to join the ERC-funded project ‘Processing Citizenship: Digital registration of migrants as co-production of citizens, territory and Europe’ (ProcessCitizenship), with Dr. Annalisa Pelizza <https://www.utwente.nl/bms/steps/people/scientific/pelizza/>as Principal Investigator.
Project and work description
‘Processing Citizenship’ investigates the information infrastructure for migrant registration at and across European borders, focusing on how citizenship, modernist institutions and territory are co-produced.
Intensifying migration waves are changing EU policies―with Hotspots being set up in frontline countries―but also the way knowledge about migrants, institutions and territory is created. Information systems are key enablers of this knowledge. They materialize legislative, political, administrative dynamics in which citizenship, state and borders are co-produced. ProcessingCitizenship aims to establish information systems as ‘interfaces’ that make visible changes in the modern nation state. It aims to develop a history of the present that accounts for contemporary materially-embedded practices of registration of migrants at Hotspots as activities of governance formation.
The project combines border studies and surveillance studies in IT and migration with a materialist performative approach derived from science and technology studies and media geography. Data will be collected via qualitative and computational techniques.
We offer a trans-disciplinary, interactive and international research environment in a leading Science and Technology Studies (STS) department. The appointee will be a key member of a team of eight, working in close relationship with the Principal Investigator. The project’s framework being given, s/he will have the opportunity to independently take day-to-day decisions and plan responsibilities.
Activities
The postdoctoral researcher will work with the Principal Investigator in further developing the theoretical and methodological framework. Together with the PI, s/he will train the team of three PhD students in ethnographic and qualitative interviewing methodologies, and co-supervise them.
Fieldwork research will be conducted mainly at Hotspots for migrant registration in Greece and Italy. It will consist of participant observation of identification and registration practices, focusing on the techno-social settings, and qualitative interviews with migrants about their everyday experiences with the registration system.
As part of the team, the appointee will support communication and organizational activities related to the project, and participate in publishing and conferential initiatives.
Profile
The ideal candidate has a PhD (or equivalent) degree in anthropology, constructivist sociology, political science, human geography or neighbouring disciplines, and demonstrable experience in ethnographic methodologies and migration/border research. The candidate must be fluent in English and preferably in another language as specified below. Knowledge of Dutch is not a requirement.
Essential:
· PhD completed at the latest by September 2017
· Demonstrable knowledge of border/migration studies and on-field experience of ethnographic methodologies
· Demonstrable experience of and willingness to embark in international fieldwork research
· Commitment to the project’s success, willingness to collaborate in a research team and write joint publications
· Excellent organizational skills, including the ability to plan one’s and others’ work and meet deadlines
· Record of topical publications
· Sound understanding of the potential non-academic impacts of the research and ways of engaging with it
· Familiarity with management of resources and willingness to accept Horizon2020 administrative and ethical behaviour
Desirable
· Linguistic fluency either in Arabic (strongly desirable), modern Greek or Italian
· Research experience after PhD
· Knowledge of major STS approaches and/or STS literature in information infrastructures
· Ability to think across disciplinary boundaries, creating an inclusive and creative culture
Conditions of employment
We offer a full-time contract (38 hours per week) spanning a period of 2 years. The appointee is expected to take office on June 1st, 2017 (although a later start date may be negotiated). Depending on relevant background and experience, the gross monthly salary on a full time basis ranges from € 3.427,- to € 4.514,- per month.
The terms of employment are in accordance with the Dutch Collective Labor Agreement for Universities <http://www.vsnu.nl/en_GB/cao-universiteiten.html>(CAO).

· historical memory and identity policy, theories of nationalism, imperial and colonial studies and postcolonial forms of identity, history in national, colonial and postcolonial discourses;
· environmental and technological history, history of science, history of law, economic history;
· historical heritage, public museums and the media, archeaology and policy of historical heritage, historical urban studies.

PHD CANDIDATE IN HERITAGE AND MEMORY STUDIES
Faculty of Humanities – Amsterdam School for Heritage, Memory and Material Culture

Tasks of the PhD candidate will include:
completion and defence of a PhD thesis within the period of appointment;
regular presentations of intermediate research results at workshops and conferences;
participation in the training program of the CHEurope project and the UvA Graduate School of Humanities;
participation in meetings of the host institutes;
co-organisation of expert meetings and an international conference;
publication of at least one peer-reviewed article.
Requirements
A relevant Masters degree, e.g. in conservation, anthropology, art history, museum studies or an equivalent academic degree in the humanities or social sciences;
the ability to speak, read, and write in competent, academic English;
knowledge of Dutch is not a requirement but will be considered a positive factor for the selection;
willingness to be seconded in the partner organisations (National Museum of World Cultures, Jewish Historical Museum);
high research abilities, as testified by your previous academic record, particularly by the quality of your masters-level thesis;
motivation;
creativity and high level of independency;
affinity with work in an interdisciplinary and highly international environment;
willingness and proven ability to work in a team;
willingness to relocate to (the vicinity of) Amsterdam;
in light of the mobility requirements set by the European Commission for this project: at the time of their recruitment, candidates must not have legally resided or carried out their main activity in the Netherlands for more than 12 months in the 3 years prior to taking up the position (short stays such as holidays are not counted);
candidates must fulfil the definition of an Early-Stage Researcher (ESR) set by the European Commission.

The gross monthly salary will be €2,191 during the first year to reach €2,672 during the third, based on 38 hours per week. The Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities is applicable.

Tasks of the PhD candidate will include:
completion and defence of a PhD thesis within the period of appointment;
regular presentations of intermediate research results at workshops and conferences;
participation in the training program of the CHEurope project and the UvA Graduate School of Humanities;

Taking our starting point in people’s own perceptions of and direct involvement in the oil economy, we aim to understand the relationship between oil, money and climate change.
Successful candidate 2 will examine how divestment projects in Germany and the UK intersect with oil industry vulnerability and visions for the future. The research will involve 15 months of fieldwork and the candidate must be able to/willing to learn German.
3) A writing sample (e.g. essay or MA thesis chapter) showing the applicant’s ability to use ethnographic methods and/or to theorise anthropologically (maximum 10,000 words).
