Uppsala University is an international research university focused on the development of science and education. Our most important assets are all the individuals who with their curiosity and their dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting work places. Research by anthropologists and ethnologists currently working at the department is undertaken in Africa, Asia, Latin America, the circumpolar areas, and in Europe. Researchers at the department have produced noteworthy and innovative scholarship. If the department’s ethnologists tend to focus on aspects of Swedish society, past and present, anthropologists have focused on contemporary societies in a global perspective. This divide is not a given, however. In Uppsala there are ethnologists doing research on identity among youth in Ghana and anthropologists researching the consequences of wind park installations and the mining industry in Sweden.

For the investigation of this research topic we expect you to hold a University Master’s Degree in Anthropology. First experiences in field research are recommended, preferably in Southeastern Asia. Candidates for this research topic have a strong interest in Museology.
The research training group, which is based at the Goethe University Frankfurt and the TU Darmstadt, focuses on concepts of value and equivalence in relation to material culture in a broad geographical and chronological framework. The language of the research training group is German. However, due to the internationality of the group, guest lectures and research projects often take place in German and English. Applications in English are welcome. Candidates without German language skills, will be expected to acquire a B2 competency after taking up the position. The School of Science and the Environment wishes to appoint three Postgraduate Teaching Assistants combined with funded part-time PhD studentships. Each post holder will be required to teach on undergraduate and taught postgraduate programmes, assess student progress and mark assignments where appropriate, and will be required to complete a part-time PhD within 5 years.

The School of Science and the Environment is the largest school in the Faculty with nearly 2000 students and over 80 staff. This is an exciting time in the development of the School which comprises three approximately equally sized Divisions providing line management of staff: Biology and Conservation Ecology; Chemistry and Environmental Science; and Geography and Environmental Management.
The Faculty provides a major part of the University’s research and enterprise income, with the School providing important inputs into the environment, health, general engineering and sociology REF units of assessment. Research in the School embraces a wide spectrum of disciplines including climate sciences, physical, human and social geographies, conservation biology and ecology, applied chemistry, materials science, microbiology, forensic sciences and environmental policy development.
This Postgraduate Teaching Assistant post is offered on a part-time basis over 5 years and will be linked to the project detailed below. The successful candidate will enrol as a part-time PhD student and will be expected to contribute to a wide range of teaching activities that currently require support within their discipline. What does the studentship cover?
Successful candidates would start in September 2016 & will receive:
full waiver of tuition fees
an annual stipend of £13,500 lasting 3 years for full-time study. Or an annual stipend of £6,750 lasting 6 years for part-time study
a research budget of £2,000 to cover project expenses & travel.
Please note that topics funded by external partners may have different conditions attached.
Research skills training is offered in the first year but after that there are no taught elements as such - students are expected to manage their own research project & successfully pass the key PhD progression points, with guidance from the supervisory team.
Who can apply?
PhD bursaries can only be awarded for candidates willing to undertake research in specific topics as determined by Queen Margaret University and/or funding partners. No bursaries are available for other research projects.
To be eligible for a bursary, the following criteria must apply:
The applicant meets the standard entry criteria for the PhD programme
The research proposal is in one of the topic areas specified above
Applicants may apply to study on a part-time or full-time basis, but they must be willing to be resident within reach of Edinburgh
Applicants must be willing to study for a full PhD, not an MPhil
Applicants may come from the UK or any other country.
Successful candidates are likely to have a good qualification in the relevant topic: either a first class honours degree or a Masters. Dedication, enthusiasm & strong communication skills in both written & spoken English are essential.

Applications are invited for Jewish History Postdoctoral Fellowship for the year 2016. Applicants of all nationalities are eligible to apply for this fellowship programme.
The main objective of the university is to provide high quality, comprehensive educational and training opportunities that are compatible to changing needs of the students.
English is the language of instruction for all programmes offered at the School of Advanced Study. It is mandatory that all theses, examination papers and coursework are written in English, except where School regulations permit otherwise. All students whose first language is not English, or whose first language is English but are not a national of the UK, Ireland or a majority English-speaking country as defined by the UK Home Office, must be able to provide suitable evidence that their level of English language is adequate for postgraduate study.

Applications from specialists in medieval, early modern or modern Jewish history are welcome. Candidates should have a doctorate or should have completed their doctoral thesis by 1 October in the academic year in which the Fellowship is to be commenced. It is a strict condition of the Fellowship that the thesis should have been submitted by that date. Applicants may be of any nationality, and their PhD (or equivalent) may have been awarded in any country. Those who have previously held a full-time university lectureship of 24 months or more will be ineligible. The Fellowship cannot be held in conjunction with any other substantial maintenance grant, nor can it be used to fund a sabbatical leave for the holder of a permanent academic position.

CARNEGIE RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

The National Council for Eurasian and East European Research is pleased to announce the competition for the Carnegie Research Fellowship Program in the United States for the 2016-2017 academic year. Scholars of the humanities and social sciences from eligible regions may apply for individual, non-degree research opportunities at universities and institutes in the United States. This competition selects university faculty, researchers, advanced graduate students, and scholars in the social sciences and humanities from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Russia and Ukraine.
All fellows will conduct research on specific topics in the social sciences and humanities, write a 15 to 30 page academic paper upon the fellow’s return home, and deliver lectures with the goal of contributing to the further development of higher education and scholarship in their regions. The Carnegie Research Fellowship Program (CRFP) is administered by the National Council for Eurasian and East European Research (NCEEER) in collaboration with the American Councils for International Education: ACTR/ACCELS (American Councils). Participants in the CRFP will conduct research in the United States for four months.
Participants in the CRFP will receive the following: 1) round-trip airfare from their home cities to their host universities in the United States; 2) a pre-departure orientation, and an orientation program in Washington D.C.; 3) a monthly stipend; 4) health insurance; and 5) access to libraries and archives, and alumni activities. Additionally, all CRFP scholars will be eligible for a scholar development fund to aid in purchasing books, technology, and other research tools, or to attend a conference and become affiliated with professional groups in the United States.
Awards for this program are contingent upon the availability of funding from the Carnegie Corporation of New York.

Scholars who have a level of proficiency in written and spoken English that is sufficient to conduct independent research and engage colleagues.
Scholars who have publications (advanced graduate students may cite papers presented at academic conferences) in a particular field.
Scholars who are able to receive and maintain a United States J-1 visa.
Scholars who are able to begin the CRFP in the United States in September 2016, or January 2017.

MOE SHORT TERM RESEARCH AWARDS (STRA) IN TAIWAN, 2016
Applications are invited for short term research awards (STRA) to undertake short term research for between 2 and 6 months in the Republic of China (Taiwan). International scholars (with the exception of those from mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macao) are eligible to apply.
The Ministry of Education (abbreviated below to ‘MOE’) has formulated these directions to encourage international scholars (with the exception of those from mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macao) to undertake short term research in the Republic of China (Taiwan), in order to provide them with opportunities to increase their understanding of Taiwan’s culture and society, and to promote mutual understanding and interaction between Taiwan and the international community.
The Ministry of Education’s key role is to communicate policies and provide a platform bringing together resources: integrating and putting to use various resources from all different sectors, and presenting forward-looking extremely practical government policies that will bring about noticeable positive changes in education.
Applicants require TOEFL 550, IELTS 5.5 or they must pass university’s entrance examination.
Course Level: Awards are available for pursuing research programme for between 2 and 6 months.
Study Subject: The research topic area to be investigated in Taiwan must be related to Taiwanese humanities disciplines, social sciences, culture and/or arts, and/or related comparative research.
Scholarship Award: a. A Ph.D. student will receive a monthly research subsidy of NTD $25,000; a postdoctoral fellow will receive NTD $40,000.
b. Recipients will also be reimbursed for an economy class round trip airfare for the most direct route between their place of residence and Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen, or Matsu. The maximum airfare subsidy available for traveling to and from Asia, Europe, the Americas, Africa, or Oceania respectively will be determined in accordance with Ministry of Education regulations. Applicants are responsible for any expenses exceeding the set maximum.

Eligibility: Applicants must meet all of the following criteria to be eligible to apply for this Scholarship:-
-An international scholar who is a Ph.D. student or a postdoctoral research fellow, with the exception of anyone currently holding an R.O.C. passport, is eligible to apply for a Short Term Research Award (abbreviated below to ‘STRA award’).
-‘Ph.D. student’ refers to a student who is currently undertaking a doctorate program at an overseas government approved and registered public or private university or college; a ‘postdoctoral research fellow’ refers to a scholar who has been awarded a Ph.D. by any government (ROC or overseas) approved and registered public or private university or college, and is now undertaking a research project at such an overseas university, college, or institute of higher education. Priority will be given to specific research proposals by scholars who have completed a dissertation, book/s, and/or other publication/s.
-Please note that anyone in any of the following circumstances is not eligible to apply:
-Anyone who at the time they apply is visiting, residing, studying (including undertaking an internship), teaching, or undertaking research activity in Taiwan;
-Anyone who has received an STRA award within the last 5 years;
-Anyone who is currently receiving some form of financial assistance from a government agency or an educational institution in Taiwan to undertake a research project;
-Anyone who would be an exchange student under some formal academic co-operation agreement signed between a university or tertiary college in Taiwan and an overseas university or college during the period undertaking the proposed research in Taiwan.

At least two letters of recommendation: one from a senior official of the institution, university, or college where the applicant is currently working or studying (for example: the president or vice-chancellor of a university, the director of an institute, dean of a college, head of a department, or head of a research institute, or a senior official from another institution or organization); another from a teaching scholar or expert in the applicant’s field. If the applicant is a Ph.D. student, a certification of their current enrollment must also be submitted.

ROTARY PEACE FELLOWSHIPS FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS, 2017-2018

The Rotary Foundation is offering 100 fully funded academic fellowships for world-wide students. Two types of peace fellowships are available i.e. master and professional development certificate fellowships.
The fellowship is intended for individuals who have chosen a career related to international relations, peace, and conflict resolution; who have work experience in these areas and who have a commitment to community or international humanitarian service and to working for peace. Applicants should consider these objectives carefully before applying.
The Rotary Peace Fellowship is the premier academic scholarship of The Rotary Foundation, supporting Rotary’s mission to empower, educate, and increase the capacity of peacebuilders through rigorous academic training, practice, and global networking opportunities. Through this experience, Rotary Peace Fellows build the skills needed to become leaders and catalysts for peace and conflict resolution both in their communities and around the globe.
