Description
The Marie Skłodowska-Curie actions, named after the double Nobel Prize winning Polish-French scientist famed for her work on radioactivity, support researchers at all stages of their careers, irrespective of nationality. Researchers working across all disciplines, from life-saving healthcare to ‘blue-sky’ science, are eligible for funding. The MSCA also support industrial doctorates, combining academic research study with work in companies, and other innovative training that enhances employability and career development.
In addition to generous research funding, scientists have the possibility to gain experience abroad and in the private sector, and to complete their training with competences or disciplines useful for their careers. More information about various funding schemes and requirements for applying is available HERE.
The project Around the Caspian: a doctoral training for future experts in development and cooperation with focus on the Caspian region (CASPIAN 2015-19) is an Innovative Training Network that has received €3.8 million under a Marie Sklodowska Curie scheme funded by the Research Executive Agency of the European Commission with the goal of training the next generation of experts on the Caspian region. The full partners of this project are Dublin City University, Ghent University (Universiteit Gent), Tallinn University of Technology (Tallinna Tehnikaülikool), Oxford Brookes University, University of Saint Andrews, Centre for Social Studies of the University of Coimbra (Universidade de Coimbra) and the Forschungsstelle Osteuropa Bremen.
There are fifteen 36-month, full-time PhD researcher positions (subject to a positive mid-term evaluation) available at the participating universities. Two fellowships are available at Center for Social Studies, University of Coimbra, Portugal. They are looking for candidates with a background in International Relations or Peace and Conflict Studies and with an interest in the Caspian region (Russia, Caucasus, Central Asia, Iran).The candidates are expected to enroll on the 4-year Doctoral Programme “International Politics and Conflict Resolution”, offered by the Faculty of Economics, in collaboration with the Centre for Social Studies, of the University of Coimbra. The fellows will have to complete a PhD thesis related to one of the following topics:
Topic 1: Foreign policy dynamics in the Caspian: security and energy at center stage of stability building in the wide regional context;
Topic 2: Main causes, dynamics and actors of peace and violence in the Caspian region.

Please note that the training will incorporate three parts:
Academic training: the students will have to undergo an extensive academic training, in the framework of the PhD Programme in International Politics and Conflict Resolution, offered by the Faculty of Economics, in collaboration with the Centre for Social Studies, of the University of Coimbra. Based at the Centre for Social Studies of the University of Coimbra they will also attend regular network events and will have access to a network of excellent universities where to receive complementary training.
Private sector training: in the course of their fellowship, our fellows will have the chance to spend a period in one of our partners to get a work experience and learn how to use academic skills for non-academic sectors.
Worldwide vision on the Caspian region: fellows will be encouraged to spend a research period in one of our non-EU university to gain an alternative, and non-Eurocentric, vision on the Caspian region.
Eligibility
Candidates of any nationality and residence are eligible to apply as long as they meet the following criteria:
Minimal qualifications: candidates must be eligible for doctoral studies in Portugal and have a Master in a relevant topic completed by Spring 2015;
Maximum seniority allowed: candidates must have less than 4 years (full-time equivalent) of research experience after their Master’s degree. This means that, from the moment they have completed their Master’s, they may have held research position but for a total of less than 48 months;
Mobility clause: candidates must not have been resident or carried out activities (work, studies) in Portugal for more than 12 months in the past three years;
Candidates must be available to assume these fellowships as a full-time position, in a regime of exclusivity, and be available to move to Portugal and set up residence in Coimbra.
Scholarship
Employment type: Fixed Term (3 years) – Full-time, in regime of exclusivity;
Duration: 12 months, renewed automatically up to 2 times, depending on the good performance of fellows and their developed activities as defined in their Career Development Plan, and on the Team Coordinator’s assessment;
Period: available from 1 September 2015 to 31 August 2018;
Salary: living allowance, mobility allowance and family allowance, in line with Marie Sklodowska Curie Scheme Regulations, subject to statutory income tax and social security contributions and other charges applicable;
Other benefits: additional funds for research and training expenses, including the payment of the PhD fees; travel costs for the participation in meetings, summer schools and other project’s activities; attendance of international conferences; fieldwork trips and travel and accommodation costs during the Secondment.

The studentships are open to UK/EU graduates with backgrounds in relevant disciplines and who are articulate, well qualified and highly motivated. International (non EU) students may apply but due to funding restrictions will need to find the difference in fees between those for a ‘UK/EU’ and ‘international’ student themselves. The Aleksanteri Institute at the University of Helsinki is a national centre of research, study and expertise pertaining to Russia and Eastern Europe, particularly in the social sciences and humanities. Between 2012 and 2017, the Institute is coordinating the Finnish Centre of Excellence in Russian Studies – Choices of Russian Modernisation, which is a joint centre of excellence (CoE) of the Universities of Helsinki and Tampere. The CoE is a multidisciplinary and international research community that strives to redefine the agenda on Russian modernisation studies.
The Finnish Centre of Excellence in Russian Studies is looking for creative, motivated and enthusiastic 1–2 postdoctoral researchers for a fixed term from 1 June 2015 to 31 December 2017, or by agreement.
We welcome innovative plans for post-doctoral research on modernisation in Russia in any of our five research foci/clusters, as listed below:
· Diversification of economy
· Authoritarian market society as a challenge
· Welfare regime
· Foreign policy
· Cultural and philosophical interpretations of Russian modernisation
The above topics can be approached from a broad array of disciplines in the social sciences and the humanities. The postdoctoral researchers will work at the Aleksanteri Institute, University of Helsinki, which is one of the largest centres in Europe for Russian studies and a dynamic place for research, teaching and reaching out to society.
According to the regulations of the University of Helsinki, the appointees must hold a doctoral degree and have the ability to conduct independent scientific research, and must possess the teaching skills required for the position. The doctoral degree must have been granted by the awarding institution prior to the closing date for applications. Furthermore, the doctoral degree is expected to have been granted no more than four years prior to application (that is, 2011 or later). The four-year limit may be exceeded only for compelling reasons, such as maternity, paternity or parental leave, military or non-military service leave, or extended sick leave. An applicant who appeals for an exemption from the four-year limit must indicate the reasons in his or her curriculum vitae.
The successful candidate is expected to have a proven capacity to publish in international scholarly journals, have strong analytical and methodological skills, and be able to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team. The successful candidate should also have excellent skills in written and oral English, as well as a good command of Russian.
The salary is based on the salary system of Finnish universities (YPJ). The starting salary for the position will be EUR 3,300–3,700 per month, depending on the appointee’s qualifications and work experience. Employment contracts are made with a probationary period of four months.

POSTDOCTORAL TEACHING FELLOW (SLAVIC PROGRAM)

The Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics at Florida State University invites applications for a two-year Postdoctoral Teaching Fellowship in its Slavic Program beginning August 10, 2015. The postdoctoral fellow is responsible for teaching courses that contribute to the Slavic Program’s curriculum and completing work related to their research interests that will culminate in the presentation of a public lecture. Teaching load will be 2 courses per semester, and will include one repeatable large-enrollment course and one graduate seminar in the spring semester on a topic of the applicant’s choosing. Special consideration will be given to interdisciplinary seminars aimed to serve graduate students across the modern languages and humanities disciplines. Letters of application should include a brief research statement that indicates how the research project to be undertaken during the fellowship is open to interdisciplinary collaboration.
The fellowship pays a stipend of $40,000 and includes health benefits.

Eligibility is restricted to applicants who have received the Ph.D. between July 31, 2012 and June 30, 2015 and do not hold concurrent employment at another institution.

Applications are invited for five year Marie Curie Zukunftskolleg Incoming research fellowships (ZIF-MC) from postdoctoral researchers regardless of their nationality and field of research. Fellowships are awarded in any discipline represented at the University of Konstanz. The Fellowships will begin on March 1, 2016, and end on February 28, 2021. Fellows have an opportunity to teach. Scholarship Description: The University of Konstanz, with its “Institutional Strategy to promote Top-Level Research,” has been receiving continuous funding since 2007 within the framework of the Excellence Initiative by the German Federal and State Governments. The Zukunftskolleg is a central scientific institution of the University of Konstanz for the promotion of young researchers in the natural sciences, humanities and social sciences, and is an integral component of the institutional strategy “Model Konstanz — Towards a Culture of Creativity.” The Zukunftskolleg forms a platform for interdisciplinary discourse between distinguished researchers in Germany and abroad, and provides them with resources for obtaining extramural funding. The Marie Curie call for applications is part of the Zukunftskolleg Incoming Fellowship Program (ZIF) and is financed by the Seventh Framework Program (FP7) Marie Curie Actions – People (co-funding of regional, national and international programs), the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the University of Konstanz.
Number of award(s): The Zukunftskolleg of the University of Konstanz offers up to five (5) ZIF Marie Curie Research Fellowships
Duration of award(s): Fellowships are awarded for a period of five years. The Fellowships will begin on March 1, 2016, and end on February 28, 2021.
What does it cover? The 5-Year Research Fellowship consists of an employment contract with the University of Konstanz in accordance with the public sector staff tariffs of the federal states (TV-L; depending on personal qualifications and up to salary group 14 TV-L). Fellows are expected to have their place of residence in Konstanz. Each Fellow receives Start-up Funding and a Research Allowance. Furthermore, a pool is available for funding cooperative projects, research assistants, travel, and equipment purchases. Each Fellow is a member of both a university department and the Zukunftskolleg. A Mentoring Committee supports each Fellow in her/his career development. This committee consists of an experienced researcher from the Fellow’s research field within the university department, as well as an advanced Research Fellow of the Zukunftskolleg.
Selection Criteria: The applications are selected in a three stage process: Eligibility check and pre-selection; International external peer-review and Interdisciplinary Workshop on Future Research Directions at the University of Konstanz. Since it is the community of fellows that makes up the Zukunftskolleg, applicants are assessed, not only for their academic achievements, but also for their personal, social and method-related abilities. The selection of fellows is organized as a highly competitive process involving intra-disciplinary as well as interdisciplinary evaluation. Criteria include diverse knowledge and qualifications such as leadership and teamwork skills, teaching or management experience, mobility and independence. Ideally, candidates already have some experience as postdoctoral researchers and have published in their area of research. There is no age limit, although the candidates’ achievements should be in line with their “academic age,” so that they have a realistic prospect of being appointed professors. Personal assessment of the remaining candidates by the Recruitment Committee in the interdisciplinary Workshop on Future Research Directions, to be held at the University of Konstanz in October 2015.
Notification: Candidates will be informed of the final decision and the evaluation of the strengths and weaknesses of their applications approximately one week after the workshop.

Alexander Herzen Junior Visiting Fellows will be invited to spend a 6-month research term at the Intitute for Human Sciences (IWM) in Vienna between July 2015 and June 2016. NATO DEFENSE COLLEGE (NDC) PFP, MD AND OMC/PAG FELLOWSHIPS IN ITALY, 2016
Applications are invited for NATO fellowships in the field of defence & security policy research & related to NATO and its partners. Two Fellowships are available for candidates from PfP countries, two for candidates from MD countries, two for candidates from NATO countries, and one for a candidate from an OMC/PAG Country. The duration of each Fellowship is four months. The Fellow will be located at the NATO Defense College, in Rome, Italy. Each Fellow will receive the amount of sixteen thousand euros. Scholarship Description: The NATO Defense College currently offers five fellowships each year in the field of defence & security policy research & related to NATO and its partners. The objective is to promote research and political consulting in areas of particular interest to the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council (EAPC), to NATO’s partners in the Partnership for Peace (PfP) and to NATO’s Mediterranean Dialogue (MD) partners and Other Military Cooperation (OMC) / Partners Across the Globe (PAG).

Selection Criteria: Candidates will be selected on the basis of their specific aptitude and experience for carrying through a major defence or security research project related to NATO, its member states and/or the Partner country (research projects with no relation to NATO will not be considered). Criteria for selection include academic qualifications, quality of research proposal, professional experience and publication record.
Notification: The NDC Research Fellowship Selection Committee meets in the month of October each year, to review all the applications received. A staff member of NDC Research Division may even contact prospective candidates for further clarification of their applications before that date, but applicants should be aware that a final decision on their application will only be made at the Committee meeting in October. Selected candidates will be notified in writing immediately thereafter and they will receive the latest version of the NDC Fellows’ Manual to prepare themselves for their stay at the College in Rome. Applications are invited for Snorri Sturluson Icelandic fellowships available in the field of humanities. The Snorri Sturluson Fellowships are granted to writers, translators and scholars (not to university students) from outside Iceland to enable them to stay in Iceland for a period of at least three months. The fellowship includes living accommodations for five to six months in the garden cottage of Einstein`s own summerhouse in Caputh, Brandenburg, only a short distance away from the universities and academic institutions of Potsdam and Berlin. Study Subject(s): Fellowship is awarded for a project in a different field from that of applicant’s previous research. The purpose of the fellowship is to support those who, in addition to producing superb work in their area of specialization, are also open to other, interdisciplinary approaches – following the example set by Albert Einstein.
