DOCTORAL AND MASTERS FELLOWSHIPS / АСПИРАНТУРА И МАГИСТРАТУРА
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
DOCTORAL RESEARCHER
The Department of Cultural and Social Anthropology at the Faculty of Arts and
Humanities at the University of Cologne invites applications for three positions as
Doctoral Researcher (m/f)
starting no later than June 1st , 2016 with a weekly working time of 29.87 hours (75%
position). The salary is based on the German TVL-13 scale if terms and conditions under
collective bargaining law are fulfilled. The positions will first be limited to 3 years, with an
option of extending for an additional 2 years.
The researchers will work in the DFG funded Junior Research Group project Volatile Waters
and the Hydrosocial Anthropocene: a Comparative Study of Life in Major River Deltas led by
Dr Franz Krause.
Research project
How do global crises – in water, economies and climate – manifest in people’s everyday
lives? How do delta inhabitants negotiate the ongoing and accelerating volatility of water
and society? And what are the similarities and differences in the predicaments of different
major deltas around the world? The overall project will elaborate an empirically-based
conceptual framework for studying and understanding life in river deltas through fields of
local, regional and global hydrosocial relations. The trope of hydrosociality will be developed
to ground the propositions of the Anthropocene discourse in concrete, everyday lifeworlds.
Project staff will produce four ethnographies of delta life in different parts of the word, with a
focus on how everyday hydrosocial interactions relate to global crises in water, economy
and climate. Alongside the PI’s research in the Arctic Mackenzie Delta, the doctoral
candidates will conduct individual research projects in an African, Asian and South
American delta, respectively. One researcher will be selected for each of these regions. The
project team will be based at the University of Cologne, hold regular project meetings and
organize annual research workshops.
Context
The Department of Cultural and Social Anthropology at the University of Cologne comprises
a thriving faculty with research expertise in Africa, Asia and Polynesia, among others. The
project also partners with the University’s Global South Study Centre, which brings together
further research strengths and opportunities. Doctoral candidates will be co-supervised by
Dr Franz Krause and a regional supervisor to be agreed on; they can propose a regional
supervisor from among University of Cologne faculty, or from any other institution of higher
education. We recommend the applicants contact their proposed regional supervisor and
secure their consent before applying.
www.uni-koeln.de
Requirements
Prospective candidates have
An inspired and feasible exposé for their individual doctoral research plans, which
resonates with the overall project. This must include the identification of a particular
delta in one of the three world regions listed above, and explicit links to one or more
of the project’s core concepts (volatility/creativity, wetness, rhythms, hydrosociality,
Anthropocene)
Interest, and preferably experience, in team work
An outstanding Masters (or equivalent) degree in social and cultural anthropology or
similar discipline
Experience in empirical social research, preferably with ethnographic methods
Willingness to conduct 12 months of ethnographic fieldwork in the second project
year
Fluency in English, a minimum of basic familiarity with the prospective fieldwork
language as well as the perspective to adequately command this language by project
year two, and
The prerequisites to be enrolled as PhD students in the University of Cologne
The University of Cologne is an equal opportunities employer. Applications of women are
thus especially encouraged; applications of disabled persons will be given preferential
treatment to those of other candidates with equal qualifications.
certificate, an electronic copy of the Master thesis (not necessarily in English), contact
details of two people willing to provide a reference, and an exposé of the proposed research
(max. 1.500 words, in English). Applications should be submitted by e-mail as a single PDFdocument
GRANTS AND SCHOLARSHIPS / ГРАНТЫ И СТИПЕНДИИ
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
SCHOLARSHIP AND VISITING ACADEMIC PROGRAMME
The Leibniz Institute of European History (IEG) awards research scholarships and fellowships to young academics (doctoral and postdoctoral researchers) from Germany and abroad. The Institute also hosts the holders of scholarships from other funding organizations as visiting researchers, for example the holders of scholarships from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and the German Academic Exchange Service.
The scholarship programme of the IEG combines research, training and international networking. The Institute enables its scholarship holders and fellows to pursue their own research project without distractions. It also offers a forum for international discussion in which they can refine the methods and questions of interdisciplinary research on European history. The scholarship holders get the opportunity to attain qualifications parallel to their research by – depending on their discipline and interests – collaborating in the varied academic activities that occur at the Institute. Through exchange with the international partner institutions of the Institute, they can integrate into the European historical research network.
Funding is provided for both doctoral and postdoctoral research dealing with the religious, political, social and cultural history of Europe between about 1450 and about 1970. Comparative, transnational and transfer-historical research projects are particularly welcome, as are projects which deal with topics of intellectual, church or theological history.
If they wish, scholarship holders and fellows can collaborate with the academic staff of the IEG in the Institute’s research areas. Each scholarship holder is assigned a contact person from among the academic staff of the IEG who can offer them advice and mentoring.
Research projects must be at least six months in duration in order to avail of IEG funding. Scholarship holders and fellows reside and work in the Institute building in Mainz. The specialist library of the Institute and the other infrastructure that Mainz has to offer as an academic centre are available to the scholarship holders and fellows to conduct their research. The duty to reside at the Institute does not preclude short trips to archives, libraries, specialist researchers and conferences elsewhere. Scholarship holders and fellows must be fluent enough in German to be able to participate in academic discussions.
