PARTICIPATION, POWER AND ENGAGEMENT - AN EXAMINATION OF FACTORS INFLUENCING ENGAGEMENT AND DISENGAGEMENT AMONG MEMBERS OF AN EMPLOYERS ASSOCIATION
Swansea University's School of Management, supported by the ESRC Doctoral Training Partnership for Wales (Wales DTP), invites applications for funded PhD study. This ‘collaborative studentship’, involves liaison with non-academic organisations, and will commence in October 2017.
This project involves an ethnographic examination of engagement within the Building & Engineering Services Association (BESA) and its membership (currently 1200 engineering firms). Traditionally male dominated, the BESA is an employers association that works to serve the interests of the building, construction and maintenance industry. The BESA wishes to better understand the nature of engagement of its membership and the specific challenges associated with how engagement happens within the BESA and across its membership. To this end, core research questions include:
• What does engagement look like in an employer association?
• Do powerful interest groups mediate or otherwise subvert forms of engagement?
• Can engagement work across competing interests?
It is envisaged that relations between infrastructure contracts will be explored in relation to modes of engagement, gender and diversity across Building Engineering and Construction firms across the UK. Such an approach brings together the macro level of political economy and public policy to sector and firm decision-making and the ways this is communicated and accomplished within and across the BESA and its membership. Ultimately this studentship offers training in ethnographic approaches to organisational research that aims to unpick the complex nature of employee engagement within Small and Medium sized Enterprises of large engineering and infrastructure investment projects.
This studentship is available on either a 1+3 or +3 basis. A 1+3 studentship provides funding for four years (or part-time equivalent), completing a research training Master's in the 1st year, followed by 3 years research funding for a PhD. A +3 studentship provides funding for the three years PhD research study only (or part-time equivalent).
Eligibility
ESRC studentships are highly competitive; candidates should have an excellent academic background in the social sciences, holding a 1st or strong upper 2nd class degree; applications from those also holding a relevant research training Master's degree (or an equivalent background in research training) will be considered for a +3 award. Full awards (fees plus maintenance stipend) are open to UK Nationals and EU students who can satisfy UK residency requirements.
Funding Details
The studentship commences in October 2017 and will cover your tuition fees as well as a maintenance grant (currently £14,296 p.a. for 2016/17 for full-time students, updated each year); and includes an additional Research Training Support Grant (RTSG) of up to £750 for three years for full-time students (pro rata for part-time students).
For further information on the studentship, please contact Dr Jocelyn Finniear (J.Finniear@Swansea.ac.uk) or Dr Paul White (p.j.white@swansea.ac.uk).

PENN PROGRAM ON DEMOCRACY, CITIZENSHIP AND CONSTITUTIONALISM POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP 2017-18 ON "STATES OF RELIGIOUS FREEDOM"
CALL FOR APPLICATIONS
2017-2018 Academic Year
Application Deadline: February 15, 2017
Apply through Interfolio: https://apply.interfolio.com/39687
The Penn Program on Democracy, Citizenship, and Constitutionalism (DCC) invites applications for a one-year DCC Postdoctoral Fellow in any discipline whose research is pertinent to the Program’s 2017-2018 theme, “States of Religious Freedom.”
According to the terms of The International Religious Freedom Act, passed by Congress in 1998, America’s history of religious freedom has endowed it with a special responsibility to promote this virtue abroad as a goal of foreign policy. The U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor has compiled annual watchdog-style reports on every country in the world – except for the United States itself – ever since. Yet how exceptional or exemplary is the U.S. record of accommodating religious freedoms? How have other countries, informed by their own histories and circumstances, negotiated complex terrains of religion, statehood and citizenship? And what are the states of religious freedom around the world today, in light of current controversies over abortion, sexuality, changing gender roles, religiously-motivated terrorism, the rights of religious minorities, and the establishment of official religions? During its 2017-18 theme year on “States of Religious Freedom,” Penn DCC will study the U.S. experience within a comparative international context, exploring how states – as political entities – accommodate or hinder religious expression and culture, as well as how social conditions – states of collective being – affect and influence the practice of religious freedom.
The DCC program welcomes applicants engaged in empirical or normative scholarship, focused comparatively or on particular nations, regions, or communities, that explores these questions and seeks to assess the complex impact of the radically evolving media landscape on democratic politics, as well as on the closely related issues of citizenship and constitutional government.
The Democracy, Citizenship, and Constitutionalism program is an interdisciplinary initiative, funded by the Mellon Foundation, which includes a faculty seminar series and annual conference on themes chosen by the Program’s Faculty Advisory Council; a graduate workshop series; and undergraduate research grants. The DCC Postdoctoral Fellow is expected to participate in the faculty seminar series, teach an Undergraduate Seminar on a related topic, and join monthly meetings to discuss the progress of undergraduates receiving research grants. The Fellow also has the opportunity to pursue the Fellow’s research and study and participate generally in the intellectual life of the Penn community. Stipend is $53,800, plus health insurance.
Eligibility is limited to applicants who will have received their Ph.D. within five years prior to the time they begin their fellowship at Penn (i.e., May 2012 or later).
Application deadline: February 15, 2017.
