The Aleksanteri Institute at the University of Helsinki functions as a national centre of research, study and expertise pertaining to Russia and Eastern Europe, particularly in the social sciences and humanities. Between 2012 and 2017, the Institute coordinates the Finnish Centre of Excellence in Russian Studies - Choices of Russian Modernization, which is a joint Centre of Excellence of the Universities of Helsinki and Tampere. The Centre of Excellence is a multidisciplinary and international research community that strives to redefine the agenda on Russian modernisation.
