The Stanford Humanities Center
Fellowship for External Faculty
External fellowships are intended primarily for individuals currently teaching in or affiliated with an academic institution, but independent scholars may apply. Faculty fellowships are awarded across the spectrum of academic ranks (assistant, associate, and full professor) and a goal of the selection process is to create a diverse community of scholars. Applicants who are members of traditionally under-represented groups are encouraged to apply. There are no citizenship requirements for these fellowships; non-U.S. nationals are welcome to apply. Awards are made from an applicant pool of approximately 300.
DEADLINE TO APPLY: OCTOBER 1, 2014
Eligibility
Research projects must be in the humanities (view definition of the humanities in FAQ); creative arts projects are not eligible. The Center is open to projects employing information technology in humanities research.
All applicants must have a PhD and be at least three years beyond receipt of the degree at the start of the fellowship year. Junior fellowships are for scholars who will be at least three and no more than ten years beyond receipt of the PhD by the start of the fellowship year. Senior fellowships are for established scholars who are more than ten years beyond receipt of the PhD.
External faculty fellowships are offered once only. Former external faculty fellows are not eligible to reapply.
Requirements
Fellowships are for one full academic year, and require the fellow to be in residence during Autumn, Winter, and Spring Quarters (mid-September to mid-June). We do not consider applications for different amounts of time.
Since we are a residential center, where intellectual life depends on collegial interaction, external fellows are required to live within a ten-mile radius of Stanford University. Fellows are also expected to attend lunch regularly and to participate in weekly research presentations.
During the year, faculty fellows are required to make an intellectual contribution to the Stanford community, usually by participating in a Geballe Research Workshop at the Humanities Center. Precise details regarding the intellectual contribution will be determined with the Center's Associate Director after fellowships are awarded.
Stipends
Fellows are awarded stipends of up to $70,000 and a housing and moving allowance of up to $30,000. Applicants who require additional support are expected to seek supplementary funding in the form of external grants or sabbatical or other contributions from home institutions.
The Center is unable to provide or finance medical insurance. Fellows are required to make individual arrangements for reasonable coverage during their fellowship year.
Application Process
Applications must be submitted via our online application system. Access to the system opens in August. All applications must be in English. We discourage the submission of additional materials with your application and cannot return such materials to you.
Applicants will be notified when their applications have been received, and will be notified of the fellowship competition outcome in late March.
Application Content
1) Contact and biographical information about the applicant
2) A curriculum vitae of no more than 10 pages
3) A statement the significance of your project to knowledge in the humanities, broadly considered (100-word maximum).
4) A brief description (not more than 1,000 words) of a research project. State clearly the objectives, significance, methodology, and originality of the project in a manner clear to nonspecialists (the selection committee is composed of a range of scholars from humanities fields and may not include specialists in your field). For sample project proposals, view: Project Proposal 1 (PDF); Project Proposal 2 (PDF).
5) Three reference letters. Applicants are advised to have no more than one reference letter from an individual at their home institution. Reference letters should be written in English. If this is impossible, we reserve the right to request a translation. Referees are encouraged to submit letters through our online application system. Referees who wish to submit their letter of reference via email should send letters to shc-fellowships@stanford.edu. Reference letters must be received at the Center by the application deadline. Consideration of letters received after that date cannot be guaranteed.
Application Criteria
Fellows will be chosen by a multidisciplinary selection committee after an initial screening process by experts in the various disciplines. Applications will be judged based on the following factors:
1) The promise of the specific research project being proposed.
2) The research project's potential interest to scholars in different fields of the humanities.
3) The originality and intellectual distinction of the candidate's previous work.
4) The applicant's perceived ability to engage in collegial interaction and to contribute to the discussion of presentations.
Applicants who have received a major research grant within the last three years generally will not be as competitive as other applicants.
For more information, contact the fellowship administrator.

International Visitors Program
The Stanford Humanities Center sponsors advanced research into the cultural dimensions of the human experience.
The Stanford Humanities Center, in collaboration with the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies (FSI), brings high profile international scholars to Stanford for short-term residencies of one to two months. Stanford departments, research institutes, and programs nominate leading scholars who have not had significant exposure to U.S. universities or to Stanford in particular. Often, these experts are working in similar fields or on complementary projects to their campus counterparts. A selection committee, made up of faculty and administrators from Stanford’s humanities and social science disciplines, appoints approximately five scholars per year to come to Stanford. Visitors are chosen for their ability to expose the campus to new and relevant research agendas or geographic regions, and the likelihood that the residency will result in lasting scholarly contributions.
Visitors are fully integrated into campus life, leading sections in Stanford undergraduate and graduate classes, giving lectures and presentations on their areas of expertise, carrying out joint projects with Stanford colleagues, and spending time in the research libraries and archives.
International visitors are awarded a generous stipend, which encompasses housing and travel expenses, for the duration of their one-month residency. As active participants in Stanford’s intellectual community, they have an office at the Humanities Center, eat lunch daily with the Center fellows, and take part in workshops, meetings and lectures at both the Humanities Center and FSI.

The Work of Cognition and Neuroethics in Science Fiction
20th to 21st March 2015
Flint, United States of America
Abstract submission deadline: prior to 20 December 2014
Interdisciplinary academic conference devoted to exploring how issues such as cognition and/or neuroethics inform, affect or influence science fiction narratives. Submissions from the humanities, social and medical sciences welcome.
Theme
To the extent that the work of science fiction must develop, order, or structure the space in which its narratives are situated, the ways in which cognition and neuroethics are deployed in these narratives remains unexamined. Unrestrained by time, space, and technology, if the expression of both the failings and ideals of humanity can be interrogated across these narratives, then the degree by which certain narratives occasion neuroethical decisions can equally be explored. What are the right answers as expressed in the genre and what implications thereof are advanced? What is the project of neuroethics in science fiction? What is the ideal expression involving the brain or brain-like systems? What cognitive moves drive science fiction narratives? What is the work of cognition in any particular science fiction narrative? What is the role of reason, reasons, reasoning, and rationality?
The theme should be interpreted broadly. Potential topics may include, but are certainly not limited to:
Neuro-evidence as functions of crime detection and justice
Omnipotence, omniscience, and action, or the Problem of Evil and extremely advanced or evolved technologies and species
Dilemmas, Death, and (in)action
Cognition as an articulation of power
Orders and Bias
Identity in/and the Medical Bay
Representation, presence, and absence of the cognitively atypical
Personhood, Personality, and Memory
Neuro-Treatments and Decisions
Neuro-Substance use and abuse
Neuroenhancement and the journey thereto
Neuro-Perfection (and atypicalities, disabilities, GATTACA, etc.)
Neuro-inva/sion/sive (unwarranted or unwelcome)
Neuro-manipulation and consciousness (Data, HAL, and the disembodied)
Neuro-augmentation (Chuck, Neo, Barclay)
Star Trek and The Borg (Picard’s rescue, rehab, and consent, Hugh, disconnecting Seven and consent)
Babylon 5 and the Psy Corps (e.g., mind as weaponry, telepathy as a trait)
Language and cognition
Science fiction and problem solving (how societies reason, justify, and engage ecology, economy, etc., through [imposed?] thought systems)
Genre analysis, tropes, figures, projects, the extent of the theme through {u/dis}topia
Single author interrogations, single series interrogations, comparisons and contrasts
Single ethical theorist applications to single series, comparisons and contrasts
The Center for Cognition and Neuroethics—a joint affiliation between the Insight Institute of Neurosurgery and Neuroscience and the University of Michigan-Flint Philosophy Department—will host this two-day conference. The first day will be dedicated to cognition, and the next, neuroethics (to whatever extent accepted abstracts allow). The talks will be limited to 15 minutes in order to sponsor a space for conversation and further exploration of ideas.

Sixth International Conference on the Image
Media Materiality: Towards Critical Economies of “New” Media
Current Submission Deadline
4 September 2014
Clark Kerr Conference Center
University of California at Berkeley
Berkeley, California USA
29-30 October 2015
Special Focus for 2015: Media Materiality: Towards Critical Economies of “New” Media
When speaking about “new” media, the claim to newness draws meaning from what is supposed to be the peculiar nature of digital technologies. This narrative is mirrored in the analysis of a historical shift from an industrial age, based in the logic of mass factory production and uniform consumption, to an information age centered on the production and communication of information. In an industrial logic “material” referred primarily to a critique of a political economy of real objects, whereas “immaterial” referred to a politics of identity and culture.
The special focus of the 2015 Image Conference will be “Media Materiality: Towards Critical Economies of ‘New’ Media.” The conference will address this theme through a series of cascading questions. For example, could the lens of “media materiality” be a productive way to view the flows of political economy, identity, and sexuality in the context of a critical analysis of what is “new” in the new media? How can one address the intersection, co-dependency, and interplay of media materiality and immateriality? And, as this question pertains to the Image Conference, how do we understand the production, consumption, and distribution of images in an age of “new“ compared to “old“ media? How might we frame critical economies of “new media in relation to the legacy, rebirth, and re--imagination of “old“ media?

Russian Orientalism through Art Production & Education
Conference: 8-9 November 2014
Hosted by Cambridge Central Asia Forum & Centre for
Development Studies, Alison Richard Building, University of
Cambridge, 7 West Road, Cambridge CB3 9DT
Conveners: Aliya de Tiesenhausen, Inessa Kouteinikova,
S.S. Saxena, Prajakti Kalra
Call for Papers: From the beginning of the Tsarist Russian
advance into the territory of present day Central Asia in the
1850s, Russian intellectuals and artists portrayed the Asian
‘other’ in particular ways. The representations by artists
beginning from the latter half of the 19th century when the
Khanates of Bukhara, Khiva and Kokand became part of the
Russian Empire have persisted over time. The Turkestan
Governor-General (1865-1920) and later, during its formative
years, the Soviet government played a significant role in
sustaining the orientalisation processes in Central Asian
territories officially through the means of art instruction and
institutions of art.
This conference aims to look at the beginnings of Orientalising
Central Asians in the 1850s and evolution of this sentiment and
particularly its use in the colonial agenda of the Russian Empire
and later transformation during the Soviet Union in the making
of the five Central Asian states in the late 1920s and early
1930s. The images of the ‘Asian other’ have persisted not only
in the region but have coloured the perception of modern day
citizens of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and
Turkmenistan in a much broader context.
In addressing the period of formation of Central Asian art
production, this conference aims to broaden the parameters
art and craft education in relation to economic and social
processes in the region.
We invite authors to present their views on the ways of seeing
different forms of Central Asian art and art production outside
of a limited framework or purely aesthetic history of fine arts.
The conference will include keynote addresses and several
interdisciplinary panels. We expect the publication of only
selected papers (selected authors will be notified shortly after
the conference). At this stage unfortunately we are unable to
provide travel bursaries and participants are responsible for
covering their own costs for travel and accommodation.
Conference participants may apply for additional funding from
their universities, international organisations or other sponsors.
Cost for visa arrangements will also have to be covered by
attendees, the organisers intend on providing invitation letters
for visa purposes as soon as possible after the deadline for the
submission for abstracts, however it is a responsibility of the
attendee to arrange the visa on time.
Deadlines: The deadline for submitting abstracts, no longer
than 500 words, is the 10th of September 2014. Please
submit abstracts toorientalism.conference@gmail.com.
The authors of accepted papers will be notified by email by
the 8th of October 2014.
Those seeking visas are requested to clearly notify the organizers
when submitting their papers so that the paperwork can be
completed immediately in order to help obtain a visa in time.
The topics include, but are not limited to-
1. Russian hegemony and establishment of the Turkestan
Government-General,
2. Classifications and Associations
Framing CA crafts
Russian colonial analysis of Central Asian crafts and economic
obsession with cotton
Von Kauffman’s native policy and flexible approach
Master Craftsmen, Apprentices, Craft learning and Brigades
“High and Low” arts
3. Diffusing colonial order
Design and process of colonial education
Colonial mass education
Theoretical framework of colonial mass education
Training a service labor class in the Turkestan government
4. Central Asia’s traditional industry
Educating a new bureaucracy
A Russian alternative to madrassas
Women’s vocational schools

Meiss/Mellon Author’s Book Award
ABOUT THE GRANT
Background
The College Art Association was awarded a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to fund the Meiss/Mellon Author’s Book Award. The award will be made in the spring for print and digital publications. The grant is a temporary measure to provide financial relief to scholars in art history and visual studies who are responsible for funding the image programs in their publications. Through this grant CAA will provide awards for first publication to help defray the high costs of image licensing and reproduction for monographs in art history and visual studies. Awardees will be selected on the basis of the quality and demonstrated financial need of their project.
A similar award (SAH-Mellon Author Awards) for scholars publishing their first monograph on the history of the built environment is being administered by the Society for Architectural Historians. For more information please contact Beth Eifrig, SAH Assistant Director of Programs, at beifrig@sah.org or 312-573-1365. Both the CAA and SAH awards will provide leading authors with the financial resources to acquire images for scholarly publications.
The Meiss/Mellon Author’s Book Award supports publication of scholarly monographs, which continue to be the most highly valued demonstration of scholarly competence. Unfortunately, many authors today must provide both a fully realized text and the financial resources for its image program. The cost for image rights and licensing, especially for digital publications, can be prohibitively high.
In order to capitalize on CAA’s expertise in the funding of art publications, the guidelines, jury processes, and award procedures for the Meiss/Mellon Author’s Book Award will be similar to those currently in place for CAA’s Millard Meiss Publication Fund grant. The jury comprises distinguished mid-career or senior scholars who are members of CAA and whose specializations cover a broad range of art scholarship. The jury has discretion over the number of awardees and the size of the grant to be awarded to each. The grants will be made directly to authors to defray the costs of image acquisitions.
The deadline for fall submissions is September 15, 2014. Successful applicants are under contract with a publisher for a manuscript on art history or visual studies. For further information, please review the Application Guidelines and the Application Process, Schedule, and Checklist .
Questions? Please contact Mallory Roark , CAA Publications Assistant, at 212-392-4437.

Millard Meiss Publication Fund
ABOUT THE GRANT
Background
MIT Press received a Meiss grant in fall 2005 to help publish Darby English’s book, How to See a Work of Art in Total Darkness (2007)
Twice a year, CAA awards grants through the Millard Meiss Publication Fund to support book-length scholarly manuscripts in the history of art, visual studies, and related subjects that have been accepted by a publisher on their merits, but cannot be published in the most desirable form without a subsidy. Thanks to the generous bequest of the late Prof. Millard Meiss, CAA began awarding these publishing grants in 1975.
Books eligible for a Meiss grant must currently be under contract with a publisher and be on a subject in the arts or art history. The deadlines for the receipt of applications are March 15 and September 15 of each year. Please review the Application Guidelines and the Application Process, Schedule, and Checklist for complete instructions.
