Institute for Research in the Humanities at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Fellowships
The Institute awards some 40-45 stipendary and non-stipendary fellowships to internal and external
applicants each year. The College of Letters and Science and generous gifts to the Institute fund
Institute fellowships. Institute fellowships are open to applicants in any discipline or field whose project
has clear significance for the humanities. Most Institute fellowships are not limited by theme or research
area, with the exception of the external Solmsen Fellowships for projects on pre-1700 Europe,
the external Kingdon Fellowship on Judeo-Christian religious traditions, and the internal Race,
Ethnicity, and Indigeneity Fellowships.
Fellowships are awarded across the humanities, at all ranks, and to independent scholars based
on the significance of proposed research, the record and potential of applicants, and the promise
of interdisciplinary engagement in the Institute’s intellectual community. The Institute is a member of
the Consortium of Humanities Centers and Institutes (CHCI) and can serve as a residency site for
ACLS fellows as part of the CHCI and American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) partnership.
The Institute also welcomes scholars with other grants or funding to apply for non-stipendary
Honorary Fellowships.
Institute fellows are expected to attend the weekly Monday seminars and, schedule permitting,
to make a seminar presentation. The weekly follow-up Tuesday lunch seminars and the many institute
symposia, lectures, conferences, lectures, and workshops are available for Institute fellows as time and
interest warrant. Fellows have access to all UW-Madison libraries and campus facilities, email/internet
access, office space at the Institute (if available), photocopying, mailbox, and assistance from Institute staff.
The UW-Madison Libraries offer a world-class library system with over 7.3 million printed volumes,
many distinguished collections, and millions of resources in journals, databases, microfilms,
government documents, etc. For more detailed information about the library collections, contact
Susan Barribeau , the Humanities Librarian at the UW-Madison Memorial Library. The Wisconsin
Historical Society is a national depository of books and papers in American history and culture, a major

Hegel’s Encyclopaedic System and its Legacy
32th International Hegel Congress of the International Hegel-Society
June 5–8, 2018, University of Tampere, Finland
Hegels enzyklopädisches System und sein Erbe
XXXII. Internationaler Hegel Kongress der Internationalen Hegel-Gesellschaft und der Universität Tampere
5. – 8. Juni 2018, Tampere Finnland
https://easychair.org/cfp/hegelcongress2018
http://www.uta.fi/yky/en/hegelcongress2018/index.html
In 2017, it will be 200 years since the first edition of Hegel’s Encyclopedia, in which Hegel’s system found its form in outline, to be revised and developed in subsequent editions. This congress discusses the nature of Hegel’s system (including the relationship between Spirit, Nature and categories of Logic), the difference between the first and subsequent editions of Encyclopedia, and considers the legacy of Hegelian speculative thinking in which the true is the whole and where “negativity” is put to productive use. It also addresses the question of whether and how the value of Hegel’s social philosophy depends on accepting Hegel’s system.
The congress will also include special sessions on the Finnish, Scandinavian and Russian reception of Hegel as well as on Hegel & Marx (200 years since the birth of Marx).
The official languages of the congress are English, German, and French.

Perception of Russia in Contemporary World : Memory , Identity , Conflicts
Joensuu, University of Eastern Finland
Finland, November 27-28 th 2017
This event is viewed as a capstone of the international research project "Perception of Russia Across Eurasia: Memory, Identity, Conflicts" which is being implemented by the international team of scholars within the framework of EU-Russia scientific cooperation program – ERA . NetRUSPlus 2016-2017 (see http://www.eranet-rus.eu/index.php ; www.tlu.ee/premic ).
The two-days' final conference will focus on the discursive construction of images of Russia by various ethno-cultural groups in different post-Soviet, post-socialist and Western countries. We welcome comparative papers not only drawing parallels between groups and states, but also between the public/political discourse related to Russia and the perceptions of ordinary people based on their historical memory, identity shifts and personal experiences.
Our aim is to bring together international scholars who could present results of their latest research on the topic and who could also be marked by a variety of conceptual approaches, regional foci, and disciplines (Sociology, History, Cultural Studies, Literary Studies, Social Linguistics, International Relations, etc.). We also propose to discuss different m ethodologies and theoretical approaches to the topic under study.
In more concrete terms, we seek contributions addressing (though not limited to) the following themes:
- Country-specific contexts of the formation of the image of Russia; historical events as main determinants of how various ethno-cultural groups perceive Russia in the countries of East and West;
- Impact of social status, political views, ethno-cultural identity, age and gender on individual attitudes towards Russia;
- Image of Russia as a mirror of cultural/social societal cleavages and ongoing social transformations in the post-Soviet, post-socialist and Western European countries;
- Russian linguistic and cultural space in the post-Soviet countries; Russian language beyond Russia between commodification and emotional attachment;
- Mass media and public discourse versus personal experience of visiting Russia/living in Russia (past and present), migration experience, personal links and contacts as determinants of attitudes towards Russia;
- Role of Russian minorities and diasporic groups;
- Attitudes towards Russia through the lens of historical (Soviet) memory: top-down and bottom-up approach.
We are very pleased to confirm the following keynote speakers:
· Vladimir Kolossov (Institute of Geography, Russian Academy of Sciences)
· Ilkka Liikanen ( University of Eastern Finland, Joensuu )
· Lara Ryazanova-Clarke (Princess Dashkova Russian Centre, University of Edinburgh)
· Maria Yelenevskaya (Technion - Israel Institute of Technology, Haifa)
