Power-Relationships in Court Societies. Marriage, Concubinage, Friendship, Kinship, and Patronage in Historical Perspective
International Research Workshop
5-6 March 2015, German Historical Institute Paris
Deadline: 25 January 2015
The GHIP research group “Practices of Power and Interpersonal Relationships at Dynastic Centres (1500-1800)” invites applications for participation in its first workshop. All interpersonal relationships in courtly contexts have political implications; each and every one is an aspect of the “micro-physics of power”. The workshop offers an opportunity to analyse the meanings of interpersonal relationships within the societal networks of dynastic centres. We will endeavour to study court societies as a whole and not merely focus on the monarch or regent. Of particular interest are those features of social relationships, which can work to improve the participants’ position within the power structure of the court, e.g. through the provision of better access to material goods or decision-making processes. Which methodologies are useful to analyse practices of power and interpersonal relationships? When and why do these dynamics cause anxiety and resistance? What is the importance of the different types of social relationships for early modern state-building processes?
All graduate students currently working on related thesis topics are encouraged to apply. We are particularly interested in comparative and transcultural approaches, not only where they are concerned with Western European court societies, but also where they include dynastic centres outside of Europe. Participants will be asked to prepare a presentation of their work of 30 minutes in length. The specific contents of the paper are left to the discretion of the presenters, and there is, for example, the possibility of focusing on a particular chapter or section of the dissertation in order to demonstrate the practical application of a specific methodology or approach. Work-in-progress is welcome, and all presentations will be followed by an encouraging discussion.
To facilitate this, all participants will be asked to prepare a short, constructive critique of a peer’s paper, previous to attendance of the workshop. The event will be launched on 5 March 2015 with a lecture by Prof. Dr. Jeroen Duindam.
Travel costs for participants will be covered and accommodation can be provided. To apply please send a short cover message (including details of language skills), an abstract of the planned presentation of no more than 250 words, as well as a Curriculum Vitae to Pascal Firges (pfirges@dhi-paris.fr). For any enquiries please contact Pascal Firges or Regine Maritz (rmaritz@dhi-paris.fr).

Disseminating Dress: Britain and the Fashion World
University of York, UK
28th-30th May 2015
Confirmed Keynote Speakers:
* Christopher Breward , University of Edinburgh & Edinburgh College of Art
* Peter McNeil , University of Technology, Sydney & University of Sweden
* Marcia Pointon , University of Manchester
* Jennie Batchelor , University of Kent
* Ulinka Rublack , University of Cambridge
* Anna Reynolds , The Royal Collection
Disseminating Dress is a three-day international and interdisciplinary conference that explores how ideas and knowledge about dress have been shared, sought and communicated throughout history. In bringing together academics, curators and industry professionals, this conference is an invitation for interdisciplinary discussion concerning methods of communicating concepts of what someone should, could, or would wear. Dress has been demonstrated to be central to the creation, expression, and subversion of cultural and national identity. However, what remains relatively unexplored is how these ideas were conveyed and perceived. If fashion is the result of a mixture of innovation and emulation, then we need to ask how these new ideas came to be circulated around and between societies.
From the London of the Blitz to Renaissance Italy, men and women have both sought out and been instructed in what to wear, forming personal, social and cultural aesthetics, while driving trade and mercantile success. This conference welcomes a broad interpretation of how dress has been disseminated throughout history, and will be an open forum for work undertaken from a variety of disciplinary and professional viewpoints.
Disseminating Dress invites proposals for 20-minute papers that explore the manifold media, methods, perceptions and motivations driving fashion dissemination across history. Paper topics might include, but are certainly not limited to, the following methods and media for transferring fashion ideas and information:
* Correspondence and social networks.
* Global networks for trade and cultural exchange.
* The written word – including novels, journals, and fashion magazines.
* Costume books, home sewing patterns, and other instructional sources.
* Visual and material culture, including both fine art and popular culture.
* Advertising, the role of fashion designers, and branding.
* Famous persons, from court culture to modern celebrities.
* Film, television, the Internet, and modern social media including MMS-ography.
* The history of taste, and the influence of outside cultural forces such as developments within architecture and the decorative arts on fashion.
Abstracts of 250 words in length, with an accompanying 100-word biography should be sent to disseminatingdress@gmail.com no later than 15th January 2015 .
For more information, please visit disseminatingdress.com.

CALL FOR PAPERS - SIXTH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON THE IMAGE
29-30 October 2015
University of California, Berkeley, USA
http://ontheimage.com/Berkeley-2015
Dear Colleague,
On behalf of the Advisory Board, we are pleased to announce the Call for Papers for the Sixth International Conference on the Image, held 29-30 October 2015 at the University of California, Berkeley, USA.
We welcome submissions from a variety of disciplines and perspectives and encourage faculty and students to jointly submit proposals, discussing the image through one of the following themes:
CONFERENCE THEMES
- The Form of the Image
- Image Work
- The Image in Society
- Special Focus - Media Materiality: Towards Critical Economies of "New" Media
2015 SPECIAL FOCUS
When speaking about "new" media, the claim to newness draws meaning from what is supposed to be the peculiar nature of digital technologies. This narrative is mirrored in the analysis of a historical shift from an industrial age, based in the logic of mass factory production and uniform consumption, to an information age centered on the production and communication of information. In an industrial logic "material" referred primarily to a critique of a political economy of real objects, whereas "immaterial" referred to a politics of identity and culture.
The conference will address this theme through a series of cascading questions. For example, could the lens of "media materiality" be a productive way to view the flows of political economy, identity, and sexuality in the context of a critical analysis of what is "new" in the new media? How can one address the intersection, co-dependency, and interplay of media materiality and immateriality? And, as this question pertains to the Image Conference, how do we understand the production, consumption, and distribution of images in an age of "new" compared to "old" media? How might we frame critical economies of "new" media in relation to the legacy, rebirth, and re-imagination of "old" media?
PLENARY SPEAKERS
- Jesse Drew, Cinema and Technocultural Studies, University of California, Davis, USA
- Wendy Hui Kyong Chun, Modern Culture and Media, History of Art and Architecture, Brown University, Providence, USA

Presenters may also choose to submit written papers for publication to the fully refereed Image Journal. Proposals are reviewed on rolling deadlines. The final submission deadline for in-person presentations is 26 September 2015 (a title and short abstract). 450 years passed from Galileo’s birth (1564, 15 of February). A Special Issue proposal emphasizing scientific, historical and epistemological aspects of Iuvenilia–Early Galilean works is necessary as a tribute to his birth. Therefore, a Call for papers concerning history, epistemology and historical epistemology of sciences is proposed:
MAIN TOPICS
Generally, the word Iuvenilia is reserved for Galileo's works in the initial pages of first volume of Favaro's edition (Galilei 1890-1909, I, pp. 7–178). According to the outlined panorama, we propose to extend the word Iuvenilia (it is the general title cited in Edizione Nazionale: Galilei 1890-1909, I, p. 7, p. 9; pp. 7–178) to the whole production of Galileo published before the Sidereus Nuncius, in 1610. We are hence referring to the content of the first two volumes of the Galilean Edizione Nazionale: i.e., De Caelo, La Bilancietta, Theoremata, De Sphaera et Cylindro by Archimedes, De motu (Ivi, I), and to Le mecaniche, early mechanics, statics, equilibrium etc. and to two pseudo Galilean non-autographed Fortifications works (Ivi, II).
Thus, before Sidereus Nuncius, we like to consider all these contributions as Iuvenilia (and their heritage) given the coherence of the subjects as far as their practical character is taken into account.

“Historical Theory in a Global Frame”
Theme Issue 2015
Call for Papers
Theory in history, or historical theory, is a field that has been of increasing interest to scholars in the academic world beyond Europe and North America (often referred to as "the West"). There is, of course, a circularity to this development, in that many scholars in the figurative "non-West" who have come to develop an interest in historical theory themselves inhabit intellectual and academic cultures that are informed by and are at times descended from intellectual/academic cultures in "the West." But these scholars are also formed by other and distinctive political, intellectual, literary, and aesthetic cultures, which have retained elements that are causally independent of or pointedly resistant to "Western" influence. This tension is perhaps most visible in culturally divergent understandings or strategies of narrativity and temporality that determine what “counts” as history.
In any case, interest in historical theory has everywhere been a culturally hybrid intellectual pursuit--not simply for scholars whose home port, or portal, is in the "non-West." Indeed, for many scholars, the hybridity itself calls into question the categories "West" and "non-West"; others have suggested the divide should really be between “North” and “South.” Perhaps seeking to retain some degree of cultural autonomy in the face of an all-consuming hybridity, some have sought recourse in the geopolitical notion of the "global south"; others, looking to the future, are less worried on this score and prefer the simpler term "global." Beyond this, regions such as Australia and New Zealand present complications of their own; these too need to be addressed.
To prompt reflection on these matters, the 2015 theme issue of History and Theory will focus on the interest in historical theory beyond Europe and North America as well as on the historiographical traditions that inspire this interest. In particular, we are interested in the ways that this interest engages both exogenous and indigenous strains of historical theory and ways of understanding, thinking about, and representing the past. But we encourage as well reflections on the problematic or productive tensions that the local appropriation of theory might foster. Has historical theory over the last hundred years been so distinctively Western as to provide--now or in the past--special challenges to its development beyond the West? Does historical theory as we know it require a fresh critique before it can be properly integrated into global historiographies? Does the idea of a global academic space enable us to see the homogeneities and heterogeneities of historical theories in the West and the non-West and/or the hybrid nature of historical theory in general? Or is it that the local issues at play are not so much theoretical as historiographical, making this a source of difference and divergence?
Please email submissions to historyandtheory@wesleyan.edu by March 1, 2015. Submissions should conform to our style sheet, available at: http://www.historyandtheory.org/submissions.html
